freitasm: ISP realises NNTP is maibnly used for copyright infringement these days, so naturally they want to move away from this kind of thing.

Usenet copyright violation involves just the binary newsgroups AFAIK. Therefore ISPs can address copyright violations by dropping those newsgroups where binaries are the predominant form of posting.

Sure. But the number of NNTP users these days probably won't justify ISPs maintaining their own servers. There are still third party services with full NNTP access around, independent of ISPs.

I'd love to know the % of Orcon's total user base that actually use the newsgroups. I'm pretty sure it'll be within single digits, and probably not worth them supporting

I keep forgetting about newgroups.... havent touched them in years. Usually because previous providers never seemed to get complete groups and you'd be missing half the posts....

/my 2 cents.

The cost of support is probably insignificant - modest hardware and software configuration, a few watts of power each day and modest network bandpass (especially if binary groups are dropped). Oh - and a paragraph or two in the helpdesk manual.

I subscribe to several text-only groups - using Agent with news.orcon.net.nz as the primary nntp server and nntp.aioe.org as a secondary. AIOE rarely finds a post that Orcon didnt.
