Got that email from Orcon too. Comparing their current broadband + homephone plans - is it just me or are they comepletely uncompetitive? $115 from Orcon gets 35Gb of data and a home phone, $105 from Telcom gives 60Gb of data and a home phone.

What's the catch? I don't think there will be any difference in line speed, given that it's currently through Telcom's gear anyway. How much slower/faster would Telecom's network be on/off peak?

Don't think there much of any LLU gear there :(

Naked broadband with Vodafone isn't reliant on ULL gear - it's available over both the Red network and Telecom Wholesale UBA.

Either way, id hardly class Blenheim as rural and they don't offer the service here.

Every phone exchange is classed as Urban or Rural by the Commerce Commission. They then set regulated pricing for wholesale DSL (both UBA/UBS and naked) in New Zealand with a difference in pricing between the two.

The Commerce Commission have classed Blenheim as rural, hence the port cost for naked DSL is higher than than in an urban area. There is no pricing incentive to offer naked DSL in rural areas, as the prcing is virtually identical to that of a UBA plan + voice line.

Yes, one of the dumbest decisions by the com com. Has killed competition in "rural" exchanges / areas.
