SCM:
DonGould: Reach problem? Is this being caused by the Telstra free weekend congesting the Reach ports?

I'd be interested to see a traceroute to 7206-gi-0-2.w-link.net to compare the path.

Is there a common Reach router in there that isn't dealing with the flood of traffic Telstra is throwing at it?

While my internet has been slow most of the weekend it seems others have had it much worse..

Ya, same IP in there... seems like the peering fabric is a round robin of some kind.  Different vlans to Level3.

If we really wanted to get to the bottom of this we'd ping NANog and ask for help, but I think it's fairly obvious.

Xbox won't stay connected to XBL, IMAP emails won't sync without timeout errors and it takes a horrendous length of time to access each GZ page. Having to use 2degrees MBB atm to do anything the latency is so bad.

Kirsten at Snap told me it was Telstra causing the issue and the management have been in communication with Telstra but nothing has been done (or likely can be done). I seriously hope Telstra do NOT do this again to other ISP customers and that we get an apology, because it has wrecked my weekends entertainment.

thought I'd add my 2cents as well and confirm that my net has been going slow all weekend as well. Given up trying to game or watch any youtube clips or stream anything. Not a huge problem for me but would like to hear from Snap as to the "official" cause of this and what  can / is being done to prevent it from happening again. I have recommended Snap to many many people and want to be able to continue to do so with confidence.

seeing i have a server in the usa, its unusable

Host your server in NZ if you need reliable speed all the time. The further you go out on the internet the more likely you will have speed/connectivity issues just by the internet's nature.

maybe so but when you pay $130/m for a 6 core machine with 64 ips, you try find a nz datacenter to do that, i bet you cant for $130 maybe $1300 yes and even then its not 100mbit up and down.

Ever since I moved my plan to include the $2 Youtube add-on Snap has been very slow. For the last couple of days its been very poor. Why is it that Snap is the only Internet provider affected by Telestra? (I can't see anybody else complaining on the other ISP boards).

The indication is that Snap doesn't have a back up provider, other ISPs might be impacted, but they don't look to be big ones.

Could be interesting to check on www.whirlpool.net.au to see if ISPs using Reach of upstream are being effected there.

Interesting to see if its all resolved once Telstra stops its free promo, which unlike Snaps has made their network unusable.

The only time I have noticed slowdown this weekend was with You Tube videos.
I did a night of unlimited last night and got my full 22GB that I get every time I do an unlimited night.

Im not complaining about a bit of slowdown, as Snap has been rock solid for me since I joined in September 2010.

RalphFromSnap: Hey Elpie, if you could PM us your username or customer number I can get someone to call you!

Sorry, "Ralph"  but this is a terrible reply.  First of all, it's obvious that it's not just one person the problem is effecting.  You even acknowledge this through your own network status update.  Why single out the OP, and why do you think a customer service rep could provide any more help to him than can be provided to all other effected users?

Sometimes I wonder why ISPs bother having a representative on this board.  I'm sure it's done with the intention of improving customer relations, but so often I see these accounts making their reputation worse.

the fact of the matter is that telstra is snaps upstream provider and there is a SLA agreement, this is not getting met.

If snap and the likes had backup pipes or even multi pipes then internet would never be slow, look at the USA they have multi providers going into the one building. they then put it all into a main router blah blah blah.

As it appears from the miniscule amount of testing I've done that it resides in the Reach areas of the Interwebz I wonder if Snap knew this was going to occur but where given assurances from TC that it wouldn't be a problem OR it was snuck up on them (I only knew about the free TC thing midweek when I saw an ad on TV and I can imagine networks cannot move as quickly as a few days, especially when trying to contact another company).

Will be interesting to hear the outcomes from this over the next few days... My internet has been 'fine' nationally but international has sucked but hey there is 'Real Life' to play with, right?

It didn't make the network completely unusable. It did affect some nodes and some DSL customers. I for example managed to move more than 50GB (online backup updates and downloading Geekzone VM HD for backup, plus an iTunes movie).

I must add that my download speed has been around 0.28mbps for the entire weekend for anything international; luckily Steam content is on a Snap! server so was still coming down at 1.6MB/s :-)
