On a side note - if the meter can include the data for the weekend - could a meter be added to include how much youtube we get to scab out for the $2?

I don't see why that's not easy to believe.

I was joking about it because after last weekend with Telstra, it was kinda expected that we'd see such a comment.

Snap are a size smaller than Telstra, to the point where entire user base going bonkers in one go isn't as likely to swamp their upstream.

In my very limited view, providers like Snap can get away with bringing this sort of value to the market without causing problems.

If Snap were to double demand it might be moving from 1Gb or traffic to 2Gb, so to their up stream that might only be adding 10% to over all traffic. (assuming that Telstra is 10 times the size of Snap).

But Telstra is the big fish in the space, so if they double their traffic they then saturate their upstream who doesn't have demand capacity on line to deal with 200k customers all doubling demand at one time.

Snap also have more than one upstream with completely different peering arrangements into Australia and the US (our two points of connection).

Telstra only deal with Reach.

So I totally believe that Snap and other small ISPs can do this without having any impact on their upstreams and the global peering market.

This is Snap's third free data weekend and by most accounts the last two went well in comparison to Telstraclear's first effort.

I do hope Telstraclear try again at some point, though with proper management of unattended/non interactive downloading to preserve decent latency/response time next time.

Im well aware Snap are much smaller than Telstra. (customer wise)
I drive past their building virtually every day, as a matter of fact.

Still, every network only buys X amount of bandwidth, per X number of customers.
Unless they have 1:1 and alot of hardware to share the load over multiple links I dont see how they could be certain for network pings not to rise / speeds not to slow as they claim.

In reality, they are betting on the fact that they dont have many heavy users on their network.
(They're all on Slingshot XD)

Thus only a fraction of their residential customer base will be maxing their lines out, so their uplinks will not get saturated to the point of congestion.

If alot more of the users decided to thrash their connection...

Then we would see the fireworks ;)

Hardly think Telstra customers thrashed their connections over the weekend at all.

How do the figures above compare with the average load of Telstra customers in Australia?

If they use the same routers for their backbone as the ones they showed us in the data centre, I think you would have to be trying pretty hard to make them struggle.
