We recently left Orcon for Telecom. Unfortunately we had not checked the fine print, and ending up having to pay for another month of Orcon (30 days) due to their giving notice when leaving clause. As Telecom switched us over within a couple of days we have ended up paying x2 for the month! Totallly negating any savings we would have made by switching. Please be aware of this if you plan on leaving Orcon.
We originally joined Orcon, as we were in one of their zones. When we moved house we were no longer in one of their zones, and had to pay extra for the same service.

How could this be, as you can only have the ADSL connection being used by one company? So that connection will only be getting billed to one company by the supplier.

I suspect they mean there was a requirement for a month's notice from Orcon (pretty standard with any ISP or telco) which they didn't give, so were billed for the next month by Orcon, as well as Telecom.

Yes I understand that, but I am wondering how the ISP can justify it. So essentially they are collecting revenue for that month after the connection has switched, but not paying expenses on that account to the wholesaler. Therefore wouldn't they be making more money for that last month, than they would if the customer was using their services. Maybe I am missing something, and they do still get charged too by the supplier, and they too have to give 30 days notice to the wholesale provider?

I believe Orcon only have 30 days notice on their plans if the no contract term / no disconnection fee option is chosen.

If you look at the signup form for either Genius or Orcon@Home, step 3 contract options... it's quite clear.

I got stung by this as well, which i accepted as it was in the contract, what i didn't accept was them losing my modem once they received it and then taking me to Baycorp because of their mistake. It was all sorted after a dozen phone calls (plus long waiting times) and finally someone taking responsibility of them losing the modem.
Would not touch them again even if they were the cheapest/best.
Two of my best mates have changed over to Orcon even thou i have warned them and both have had problems with there service and wanting to leave already.  It was the best ever 'i told you so!!'

We signed up with them a number of years ago. I am pretty sure we would have gone with the contract option, as the I recall the no contract option cost extra.

Even when you have been on a contract for a year and then stayed with the company for four years after, you still get the 30 day disconnection notice (and a lot of stuffing about)

So what way is the best to do this in terms of making sure we are not billed twice ??

(We are in a contract, and will be breaking that and paying the fee)

Orcon have been terrible in their support (However main reason we are moving is because of their overpriced plans) .. so its time for a changing

Do Orcon charge a month in advance? I believe Telecom do.

A month in advance charge theory: please correct me if im wrong

So if your last billing date is on the 20th of every month for example

That means you will be receiving your new bill and new month starts on the 21st of every month

So new bill is 21st March which you will need to pay. That means the services the bill covered is from 21st March to 20th April. Thats a month in advance charge.

If you churned away from Orcon to Telecom and your sevices are with Telecom between 21st March to 20th April, you won't need to pay Orcon anything.

Also if your services churned to Telecom for example 30th March from Orcon, you still have  20 days worth of services left with orcon but you are paying one full month. You won't get any refund back for that 20 days.

Does this make sense? :

bameron: Hey Liam,

Firstly, sorry to hear that you're considering leaving us! Is there anything I can do that would encourage you to stay on board?

Our @orcon.net.nz email addresses are provided free for life, so you can continue using them even if you change providers.

Cheers,

Cam

Hi there, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I can get a plan with larger data for a similar or lower price with Telecom. Orcon has been good, but my I need more data

Thanks

I wanted less data....but Orcon wouldn't change my 103GB / month plan without taking over my phone line.  There is no unbundled service in my area, so it would just be the same old Telecom line and I'd have been paying Orcon for it.

But going to Telecom as my ISP, I ended up on 80GB a month AND the phone line for about $100 / month less than I had been paying for them separately.  The other unexpected benefit was that I can now watch hi-res YouTube videos at peak times without them stopping every 30 seconds...as had been the norm on Orcon (if they played at all).

People may recall me being huffy about Telecom for a decade or so while they were in anti-competitive mode in the '90s....but my experience of them in recent years has been very good. Which surprised me.  But I can't complain.

Orcon is owned by Kordia now and they bill themselves the "business ISP". When I've seen that in the past it has always been bad news for residential users....and the take-it-or-leave attitude to my land line after having had Orcon as my ISP for 8 years (and paying them about $140 / month for the privilege) was all the confirmation I needed of that

It's not all fluffy kittens and rainbows for business either.  Routine half hour hold times for every call, voice service being down for AN ENTIRE WEEK because they only allow you to call them for support Mon-Fri 8am-5pm (and can only book Chorus techs for three days away, and don't follow up when Chorus closes the ticket with no action because of a single missing detail).

Getting slightly OT but this plan is NOT available in cable areas. If you are in an InHome area it doesn't apply, it only applies in DSL coverage areas either ULL or Wholesale.

It makes absolutely no sence that TCL can offer better deals over a 3rd party wholesale network than their own network, but hey, lots of things they do make no sence.
