I must have some priority tagging on my number, I never have such long waits etc when trying to get through to Orcon :) Not that I call them much.

But no, the call back service dosent appear to have been running for quite some time, only encountered it once or twice a few months back.

networkn: It beggars belief they would get a call centre in a foreign country (Except for the pattern of always looking for the cheapest way to solve a problem). When was the last time a company used a call centre in a foreign country and the feedback from it was positive? They have had so much bad press in recent years, surely they would be looking for a complete win to balance it. Hopeless.

The thing that beggars belief is that Orcon is a State Owned Enterprise, so it's our government shipping jobs overseas while ignoring record high unemployment domestically.  As a taxpayer and a customer, I'm actually offended by it.

Yah but state owned is not state RUN, and it's the same deal with the ports. They own the ports but there is a separate entity that runs the ports (and Orcon). Where the Govt might get involved is if Orcon (Kordia) were breaking the law, or if the ROI wasn't returned. Other than that, they run much like a private company.

True indeed, and I appreciate that. But the government hasn't even prodded them - I would have at least expected to see a statement that "we would like to see this opportunity to create domestic jobs" but not even that. I get that they can't direct them to do anything.

Well you got this part right, why does a government SOE own a retail/business ISP and hosting company? It's not a public good or natural monopoly, the government shouldn't be in this industry.

So switch your business to a NZ ISP that uses NZ support staff only, eg: (iirc) Maxnet, Xnet, ICONZ, Actrix, Inspire etc... oh you don't like the higher price you have to pay for service? That's called hypocrisy, you can't have it both ways!

I'm hardly on a cheap plan.  In fact, I'm on one of Orcon's more expensive plans and I could save money by changing provider, and if the service doesn't improve I may yet do so, despite how tolerant Orcon is of eccentric account configurations (such as having an LLU and a UBA line provided to the same address and billing calls at different rates for each one).

I'd also point out that many of those providers don't even offer Business DSL.  In fact, Business DSL seems to be one of those rarities only offered by the Big Five (Telecom, Vodafone, Orcon, Slingshot, TelstraClear).
