Not a VoIP expert at all, however, I imagine it works like most client/server applications.

Its likely your VoIP client (you/your PC) connects through to your provider (the server) to log in etc. It will then hold a TCP session open to allow calls to be made back to you. Whenever that session is dropped (cause the Internet sometimes has problems....or you change networks - eg cell phone moving around cell sites) the client will re-establish a connection.

CGNAT should recognise that session and keep it open too - it would have to or dozens of applications would stop under it!

Since its all out from your side, your IP address is pretty meaningless! Certainly your provider has no way to know what your IP address is "today" at any point in time.

TLDR: It should be of absolutely no impact to you.

And just to confirm, I have a customer on CG-NAT with 30 2Talk VOIP handsets, all going fine.

It's highly unlikey this wouldn't work unless the VOIP/SIP provider is doing something very wierd.

Hmm, but I suppose Plex servers aren't going to work eh.

This I can comment on confidently :)

They will work, however, you will not get direct connections. So your (remote) clients will be going through the Plex.tv servers and getting reduced rate as a result. A far from ideal situation. You'll want a public IP address for this.

If all your clients have IPv6 you could make it work I guess.

I'm having issues with Plex remote access, and it hadn't even occurred to me this could be the reason until I was doing some digging today. My FritzBox IP is in the 100.67 range so i'm on CGNAT, and can't get plex remote to play nicely at all. Just got on to tech support to see if I can get one of the static public IPs.....!

Glad to see people correctly troubleshooting the issue - hopefully they'll painlessly assign you the IP and you'll be back in business.

Did you ask for a static Ipv6 too? It seems that if you can convince them of a Static IP it would be a v4 only and if you want the static IPv6 then it will be $10 a month... Perhaps you should clarify.

Your mistake was asking for a "free static IP" - that just sounds like you heard about it and want it for the hell of it.

Instead, phone up, say "I am using an application that always worked fine at the start and now doesn't work - looking at my router I have been changed to CG-NAT so suspecting that is the reason". They'll then sort you out. 2degrees want a proper reason with why you need a public IP and I totally get why.

This CG-NAT business is a real shame. I was thinking about taking advantage of the on-line offers at the moment to move to 2degrees but CG-NAT implementation is big enough an issue to pass on a great price. I hope 2degrees realise they lost at least one potential customer here (and couple of others I have steered away) for the sake of being stingy on IPv4.

What was your real reason for not going with them or recommending them? Because it can't be the CG-NAT issue (because tha's not actually an issue).

They give you a public IP for free if you ask, so things are no different to what they were previously, and they also have one of the best prices in the market right now.

You may deem it "being stingy" but the simple reality is that unlike the past 10 years or so where people have warned of impending doom of IPv4 exhaustion, we are now actually at that point. Late last year RIPE issued it's last remaining IPv4, and in this part of the world APNIC had 18% of their last /8 remaining and you can only buy this in a /23. IPv4 address space is now incredibly short and going for big $$$ on the resale market.

You may disagree with CG-NAT but the simple fact is for 99% of users it has zero impact to their Internet experience.
