eXDee: General question about lines, if the cabinet is the next block over, and its 400m one way, 600m the other way by road distance, then what could be a possible reason for 15dB atten which approximates to 1.08km using the 13.81db per km estimate? Is there such thing as a bridged tap for underground wiring? I assume the cable joins straight to the grey telecom post at the end of our driveway, which i know has several cable bundles inside it of varying thickness.

Line coming in to the modem is the black cable straight out of the ground, joined to some cat5e with the 3M gel splicers, rj45 into the fritzbox. All other wiring bypassed.

I know DSL has a lot of variables at play, but just curious if there's anything that would be likely causing it. The black cable coming into the house is probably about 35 years old.

i had the same problem, and in my case i had a extra 300 m of cable that went around 4-5 houses before it went to my place. Chorus took the loop out and i went from 19dB atten down to 14dB atten which is about right for how close i am to the cabinet and my download stats went from 14Mb to 18Mb .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Ah interesting. Anyone know how possible it is to get this inspected somehow? Or would they not look into such a case/charge hundreds for it?

Attenuation is not the main issue - it is the echos from joints, change in conductor size, multiples, water in the cable, house wiring without a master splitter etc etc. You need a TDR to get a totally scary view of what you actually have between your modem and the cabinet.

Yip attenuation isn't the big thing that many people think it is - yes it's an indication of your copper MPF length, but at the end of the day it's not just about the length of the copper, but how that copper is performing when carrying a xDSL signal.

The higher the frequency the more likely you are to see your bitloading graph turn to custard because of corrosion, poor quality wiring (such as flat cable that isn't twisted), mispaired jack points (mixing M/S and 2wire) and lastly and most importantly any line stub/bridge tap.

You can have a perfectly good 5dB connection 200m from an ISAM and get absolutely terrible VDSL2 performance if you've got wiring causing degraded bit load.

Chorus came Thursday as planned and quickly found that the line comes into the house upstairs. He also found that a redundant sky ph jack was pulling everything down.

So for me it was internal house wiring, which is the cause of most if not all problems.

I logically thought the garage wire was the main line but it was actually a feed wire from upstairs.

So thanks for helping and thanks to SNAP for sorting this out fast ie TheRalph.

Looks like your upstream is 10344Kbps - Attainable is 15960Kbps (one day this limit might get removed hopefully!)

16 Mbps upload sync? I thought 10 MBps was the maximum possible upload sync. Can you post a screenshot of the DSL tab?

michaelmurfy: Where abouts are you based? You can't cheap out with VDSL, get a master filter installed. If you're in Wellington Cyrill7 does an excellent job of this.

I am in Flagstaff, Hamilton.

I have no idea where the actual exchange is from me though I cant remember seeing any non descript brick buildings about. Perhaps that is why I have not seen it.

springheal: The topic is very misleading and ( as "theralph" rightly points out ), should be changed pronto as it sheds bad light on the provider when it's no fault of theirs.

Secondly, snap offered to have a chorus rep check out the op's line. As it was a fault on the op's premises, the cost should not be "non chargeable".

Unfortunately, too many people are very quick to blame everyone else before thinking the fault may be in their own backyard.

The main purpose of this thread was not the speeds and the fault lying in my house all along, it was the service and experience I received from day one of placing the order. Once I actually got online with Snap which was 14 days after I placed the order I still had from the 17th April until the 8th of May before the issue was actually sorted. This involved multiple line port requests and week waits when team leaders didnt respond when escalated.

TheRalph since getting involved got Chorus to actually come out to my house and test some speeds rather than Snap just getting Chorus to reset the connection at the exchange and make sure the port went through.

The service since TheRalph got involved has been very fast and very effective which begs the question why could this not have been done in 2 days from the 17th April like it happened just now? That is where my gripe was.

I agree with other posts saying that the wiring should be compulsory for these connections but as it was an existing ADSL line port over and we do not have a monitored house alarm and were getting VOIP there was no need to pay the $400 for the wiring full install at the time I placed the order.

I do agree that the charge for Chorus coming should fall on me and if Snap changes their mind I will pay their invoice but at the same time what about me paying for a service from the 17th of April that has only just been resolved 7 days shy of a full month later?

This was not just a case of dumb home owner crap wiring, the house wiring was the final piece in this 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. There were a ridiculous amount of failings before that that were out of my control.

I did a speed test just now and am happy enough with the results. I have learned a lot on this subject now and am humbled by the vast telecoms knowledge required to make all this work and im an EST A & NZCE Electronics from Waikato Poly.

A question, should I get a master filter installed? I have got the line running straight to the Fritz with no internal wiring connecting anywhere.

Is there a simple reason why I sync at 46Mb and achieve 20Mb?

I wouldn't bother. Your connection looks very good now and I don't think a filter will make any difference. You'll be close the 50 MBps limit once you move to DLM-1. Then again it won't hurt and if you do the install yourself it's not expensive.

No, that doesn't look right. What speeds do you get to other servers? Is there anything on your PC/network that could be a bottleneck? How are you connecting the PC to the Fritz, e.g. are you using WiFi? Your upload speed is not degraded at all so it looks more like something is imposing a limit on the maximum speed.

Hmm yes good point I cant think of anything or any self imposed restrictions, but if you had any ideas for what to look for or what you think could be causing it I can zero in on it.

I am connected to the fritzbox using one of those tp link powerline 200Mbs as I dont want to run a cable across lounge floor.

Edit: You are absolutely right. I just used the app on the samsung and I got 36.5 Mb down and 9.4 up.

Again I am eternally grateful for the concise fast help on this forum.
