FireEngine: Yep. So is 1:59:59am currently....I'll leave it to your imagination when the "early evening peak start time" might be.

Be assured our capacity and bandwidth management policies and technology are continually reviewed to ensure we give the best possible experience we can.

Actually, FireEngine, I'd not like to leave it to my imagination if it's all the same to you.

Can you stop being coy and say on the record between which hours traffic shaping is applied at the moment, please?

Currently its set to 1600->0200 but we are reviewing that currently.

We have more capacity coming online and some new equipment on its way to manage this better.

Quite possibly jumping into an inappropriate thread, but I'm having some weird experiences with Orcon unlimited at the moment and wonder if anyone else is having similar issues. I don't appear to be getting a speed jump at 2am... and appear to be rate limited per download thread.

Backstory: Was an Orcon customer in Central Welly for a year and moved on to unlimited during the year, then went house sitting for a couple months and just left my account as it was... recently moved into a new home in Karori and moved my Orcon account there with terrible results.

I transfer files to and from a web server in France... I used to be able to download from the site at about 1.3MB/s with a single download (scp). I now appear to be limited to 50kB/s/download from the site; Last night I left some tests running overnight, which would download a file from servers in France, Los Angeles, Australia and Orcon's speedtest (the random4000x4000 file) at 7 minutes past each hour from 10pm until midday today. In addition, each file was downloaded five times with the difference being the number of download threads used (15, 10, 5, 2 and 1). I used aget for the downloads with the command taking this form: aget -n 15 -f http://host.domain.tld/file.zip

The simplest way to show the difference are these two charts... EDIT: my images appear to have been partially eaten... the four servers are: purple - orcon speedtest random4000x4000.jpg, green - 3fl.net.au speedtest file, red - speedtestla in LA and blue - my french web host

The end result of appearing to have slow single threaded downloads is that youtube takes buffering to a whole new level and is unusuable (especially since youtube stopped buffering the whole file if you are not playing it), and my OS updates that I used to get from Auckland Uni that used to be over 2MB/s are now about 200kB/s.

Anyone have any ideas of what might be going on? I've been a heavy user in the past, but had not used any data in about three months... but I could imagine that if heavy users get punished I could be in that group. I'd call the helpdesk, but that's never been a pleasant experience and thought that geekzone might illicit some sensible/fanciful/amusing suggestions of what might be up.

EDIT: I have raw data for all thread count results... but I can't post a link to my google docs spreadsheet and the image I posted got half eaten and you can't see enough data for it to make much sense

We don't throttle per thread. We only traffic manage P2P traffic.

if you are seeing per thread issues, it would suggest a small grade of packet loss somewhere which would have an effect on TCP.

Thanks for the speedy reply! I shall keep digging to see what I can find... I was ready to discard most other suggestions due to the near uniform results I was getting all night during both on and off peak times.

I've just done an mtr to one of the hosts... and found this in the mix:

Loss% Snt Last Avg Best Wrst StDev
0.0% 23 0.3 0.3 0.2 0.4 0.1
31.8% 22 121.9 148.0 67.1 340.7 75.7
4.5% 22 106.6 127.0 91.5 277.0 47.2
19.0% 22 107.3 128.2 90.9 228.8 38.5
13.6% 22 126.8 135.5 95.6 233.3 47.8
9.1% 22 237.1 270.4 227.9 387.8 50.8
18.2% 22 247.3 320.4 242.6 445.0 69.1
68.2% 22 296.5 328.7 296.5 445.2 53.1
81.0% 22 365.5 412.2 365.5 514.3 69.5
19.0% 22 408.1 440.1 402.1 522.3 39.3

I shall ensure I send all packets with a compass, map and emergency bus fare to see if that helps them get where they want to go...

I was looking at getting this plan since our speeds have increased. So im taking it that it is like Telecoms old "Big plan" or whatever they called it a few years back, the more people on the same plan at the same time, the slower the speeds?

No. Once again we don't shape or throttle by Plan or ip pool, we currently <only> shape P2P traffic between 4pm and 2am. That will be reviewed shortly as further capacity and technology come online.

ALL other traffic is the same priority 24/7/Plan.

Sorry that I haven't responded for a long time, I rang up Orcon recently to get more information on the plan and was told that they could not supply a phoneline to me because their hardware is not installed for my area, so the best they could offer me was a VoIP, the fact that we really desire a solid phone, that wont go under if the power goes out, or the internet crashes, coupled with all the bad news I've heard about orcons VoIP service makes me very hesitant about swapping over now.

Looking into it, It seems the $99 deal is part of the Orcon Genius, so is it correct in thinking that even if we could get a homeline through orcon, it'd cost us more than $99?

FireEngine- I've PMed you my address, if you could verify that the only phone option at my address will be VoIP, just in case the person I spoke to on the phone was misinformed.

I PMed slingshot asking what they could offer me to stay, best they could offer was one month free, with a 12 month contract, which to be honest is not worth the contract, let along a reason to stay with them. It's looking like I'll be staying with Slingshot for now though, unless it turns out I can get a phone line through Orcon.

Hi Alexcc

If you are in our LLU areas, then a solid phone line is standard. However for areas which we don't (Telecom Wholsaale) we only offer the Genius VOIP Solution at this stage.

I have two accounts with Orcon, but I think these are all from the central city connection. These are my international results, the ones against Orcon's SpeedTest server are much better as you'd expect, but Takapuna != the internet.

I am on LLU which does give a phone over the line. However this is not a reliable as the old Telecom version. It appears to be an IP connection to the local exchange and then on to the copper. I have had 2 failures ( one just a few days ago) where the phone and ADSL have failed together. In both cases it was not a copper line fault as there was voltage on the phone line - just no dial tone!

I am really really disappointed with ORCON... unfortunately I signed up for a year contract with them just 2 weeks ago.... :(

I was with Xnet UFB, just switched to ORcon 2 weeks ago.,, I have had so many issues with their service since.

seems like ORCON service has degraded a lot compare to 2 years ago when I with them on ADSL

got my phone/internet connection activated around 2 weeks ago.. I am already getting the 3rd modem replacement sent to me today.. so already 6 days without internet and phone connection within 2 weeks. Have been on the phone with their oversea tech support for around 2-3 hours these 2 days on my mobile.... and all those time wasted I am still without my Phone connection...

tried switching to a cheaper plan on their website since I am not really wanting to pay for the most expensive Ultra fast plan with the current service,, but then again their Modify Plan option on their website doesn't work..

then I also tried "Request Support" on their website twice around a week ago.. still haven't had any reply from them.....

downloaded their Android App, the only info I can see using that app is my home phone number and their Orcon logo.. no other info about my account at all... completely NOTHING else..

I am on the unlimited plan, I know that they will throttle the speed during peak hours.. so I wasn't expecting getting full 100MB download during peak hours.. but hey..... 3-4Kbs downloads??? WTF.... I can get a better download speed on a dialup connection.....

....... I need to stick with this for another year :( :(.........

I've escalated this with the team but it looks like you have had two possible power adapter issues but there don't seem to be plans to ship you a third device at the moment as your internet is working.

I don't think orcon is tellingg the truth..... I've been sending packets to two different ip's over the past 48 hours one located in New Zealand and one in the USA.... The purpose of this was to check if and when internet shaping occurs, and the results aren't that great to tell you the truth....
I've yet to look over the entire lot of details, but if I feel something is not right I'll pass it onto a specialist to double check...
