myfullflavour: If your LFC is UFF and you're in Tauranga, expect a 3-4 week wait for SDUs. Even longer for ROW/MDUs.

Are you able to shed some light on why this is the case? No wonder only a handful of people have signed up to fibre.

Umm probably because there is way more than 'a handful' of sign ups. The boys are busy as.

Most of the waiting time will be to do with the consent for civil work. That is the biggest hurdle.

If the duct to the property is good and house is relatively easy to wire an entire section can be done in one day with two guys working on it. However, this is just not the case with most installs.

It's not even the time it takes to get the physical work done.

We've placed plenty of SDU orders which can physically be turned around in less than half a day. One guy does the civil thrusting under the lawn, the other does the internal work and sorts out the cabinet patching when the fibre gets blown through.

The issue in Tauranga (and to an extent in Hamilton) is there is far too many orders being placed than the "system" can handle.

It's been like that since the middle of the year. The LFC keeps employing more people, the amount of orders continues to grow.

And we don't even have Telecom/Vodafone selling here yet!

We received a similar indication from Snap about our area and that the delay was due to demand for installs. No biggie at all as we were asking for an install during the Christmas period. There are Chorus Van's installing in our neighbourhood almost everyday. The demand is certainly there.

johnr: Not ISP related at all the RSP does not do installs, Order goes from retail service provider to the wholesale service provider

I do know what you are referring to is in a slightly different context to what I'm saying but my time for install WAS ISP related due to the fact the Snap stuffed up my ordering process. I called them 4 weeks in advance to moving house (and moving to UFB) and each tech I talked to about the setup managed to miss crucial details from the job they had logged for the move/changeover. I was told by a tech that they could setup ADSL service in the meantime and that would only take a day or two when in reality (confirmed by another Snap tech), that xDSL service takes far longer than that to provision. Once Snap sorted out their problems, Enable (in Christchurch) were insanely quick, calling me the next day to arrange scoping and then the installation.

I like Snap but I've now learnt it's always good to get techs to repeat back details they have logged in support/provisioning tickets :)

Finally got UFB installed last week. On the 24th of Feb I was given a date of the 7th of March but on the 4th of March a team arrived to wire it all up with minimal disruption to the landscape. A technician followed a day later to connect us to the cabinet.

Well worth the 5 week wait in the end:

Interesting how UFF rate-limit the layer 2 connection. On their 50/20 product, you can always get 50Mbps on the Speedtest. There must not be any allowance for network overhead on the 100/50 product as I'm yet to see a result go faster than 94Mbps.

Wait times for Tauranga / Hamilton in case anyone is interested is minimum 4 weeks at present. If something goes wrong hitting the first RFS, it's likely you'll get a new RFS which is 2-4 weeks after the first one.

that's christchurch though?  so not uff... but enable instead.  performance is different on different providers (enable, chorus, uff, etc)

Rate limiting is also handled very different by Chorus and the LFCs.

Chorus use the MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) approach, all the LFCs are using TR101/156.

The MEF policing was one of the reasons some ISPs had speed issues with Chorus in the early days, as traffic policing by the ISP before it entered the Chorus network was not optimal for their requirements.

danielfaulknor: 3 months. Chorus screwed up the design 3 times and it was an MDU install.

Thank goodness someone in the country recognises the difference between chorus and the ISP.
