There mate 100m down a side road is getting 15Mbps down and 6Mbps up haha, must be frustrating.

My gut feeling is its a line fault, but Ive advised them they may need to rewire their housing wire (or Ill come down and do it for them). They have no issue with that, they just want to know where the fault is so it can be fixed.

It was only due to them skyping they realised their net was slow (skype just wont work at all even just voice). So the son gave me a call as hes not technical at all either.

Ive never seen one of these fritzbox so this should be fun.

The FRITZ!Box has a user interface for device settings, which can be opened in any web browser by entering http://fritz.box.

Give that a go. You will see a little option for DSL on the home page, Click that it will give detailed line stats.

Hi Tealeaf,

There are a large number of potential causes for this, such as the address being outside of the approximated range for VDSL service and it being not suitable, to issues with the wiring in the street, faulty jackpoints or wiring in the premises, or as has been pointed out, they may have decent sync rates and something is using their bandwidth without them realising it.

The first port of call for the customer is always the ISP, can you please ask the account holder to call us on 0800 022 022 opt 9 and we'll check it out for them.

@tealeaf get them to scan the PC with malwarebytes free home edition make sure nothing dodgy is on it

thanks guys.

yeah done that linux just to be sure, all apple non notebook devices though, but have made sure there is no traffic etc.

there is only so much i can do for them from a far.

i really thought once i got a pic showing no filter on id cracked it easy job haha, but surprisingly no difference.

yeah i know theres a lot to check, worked in telco for 20 years, started in faults and early ADSL group back in the day, so i know theres a lot to check, it was more a case of these days who do you call first? so 2 degrees it is, cheers mate.

thanls Tim buddy, found that but wasnt 100% sure what the password will be i presume the one they use for their account. also thanks for the pdf. ill get that sync info etc.

Should they contact Chorus or 2degrees? Chorus say VDSL up to 5Mbps, but 0.04Mbps up is shocking, no wonder they cant even use skype voice or even youtube sometimes.

Worst of all they are locked in for 2 years for this.

I have friends here in Hawkes bay with the same thing sub 1Mbps up/down and still paying full price for it but unfotunately for them they can't even go 3/4G as there's no cell service either and all that is just 2KMs of the main road

I personally think they should scrub saying you might get 30/10 in your address, its misleading. Sure it can happen for some, but in situations like this the internet is virtually useless for them. Of course it could be a fault. Will await their outcome.

nothing wrong with stetting a reasonable expectation.

normally chorus undervalue prequal values on purpose. Its easier to state lower than be explain why its wrong.

Ofcourse that is only an Estimation.

It sounds like ADSL2+ will be a better product. Considering its distance. Get the internal wiring fixed or a master filter. If your friend still gets a very poor speed, then get it changed to EUBA (ADSL).

It might be too far from the cabinet.

Any speed estimates provided for DSL (either through us as the provider or the address checker on the Chorus website) will be based on what the circuit is theoretically capable of, and is a pretty conservative estimate in most cases. Any drastic difference to those estimations will be pretty solid indicator of issues on the line.

Thanks Ralph. Yep my gut feeling after 25 years in telco including the early days of NTS and the birth of ADSL is its a line issue. I honestly doubt highly its in the house, but havnt closed my mind to it. Knowing the lines around there which get minimal servicing and are subject to freezing in winter and 30+ in summer, thats my gut feeling. Its possibly just the lead in has battery or earth or something non conducive to what we want.

But essentially they got the service to be able to skype with family and at this point the service is only really useful for google, even youtube has its issues depending on resolution.

You can understand their frustration at a 40Kbps service?

Yep she has. It was a setup issue at 2degrees, these things happen.

Ill chat with 2degrees care in private as I dont think its fair on them to convey this as a typical situation. Ive seen processes go wrong in every Telco I have worked for.

2kms is half the range of DSL so most of it will just be lost in the distance of the driveway.

I dont feel 1Mbps up is that bad for rural DSL, yeah its a bit third world, but not the ISPs fault, its the cabinets limit depending on distance. but 40Kbps clearly no service should be running that slow. Ive skyped with this rural crew and the video is working now, yeah it gets patch ocassionally but not a deal breaker.
