As a follow-up, after 22 minutes on hold, I was told I have to purchase a new SIM card for $5 and see if the problem persists before they'd pass on any details to a tech for investigation. Not the solution I was hoping for, but if that's the process, so be it and I'll suck it up.

 

 

According to 2 degrees own web site, if your SIM is faulty, then they will replace it for free. Source: https://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/mobile/sim/

So I found that it was Android messages that was messing up, switched to an alternative and it was picking up all texts... dumb.

Yes, the link I posted last week was an article saying Android Messages has a bug or two or three. Who would've thought the messaging app would fail at one of its most basic pieces of functionality.

 

Since installing a recent update to Android Messages I haven't had the problem again.
