PDAMan: You are right, but there is no such thing as Free because if you compare with other suppliers it comes out very similar and as you say, you don't get a rebate for not having it.

Anyway, it's not really about the cost. My contract says I get it. I want it because I can see who is calling me. For example if it's my family I can take it, if it's a telemarketer offering me an awesome deal I don't want or gettng me to donate to yet another charity of the week. I can ignore it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not tight, just selective and don't like unwelcome intrusion into my family time. Now I can't tell who is calling and my contract says I should have that service.

I fully understand what you're saying - I get the telemarketer calls too :< Someone in sydney keeps trying to tell me ive won some lottery.. like 4 times a day they call! I never answer anymore but they keep on ringing!

(p.s. it's not our place to judge what you do with money! I myself am sick of the telemarketers as well - and when you donate, your name seems to appear on every other donation mailing list! Just the other week I went grocery shopping (I am by no means wealthy!) and the stroke appeal people were doing their collection thing. I gave one $3 and he gave me a sticker to make the others back off - but I just thought to myself, why should I have to wear it? Why should they DEMAND money from me? so I came across some more collectors and showed them my sticker and instead of doing something like saying "oh thank you" all I got was "it doesnt count if you dont put the sticker on your shirt." EXCUUUUUUUUSE ME? rofl ok offtopic but thats one cause I wont give to again!)

It may not be techie but features on phones have reasons, so I don't see it as off topic. It's interesting how we are supposed to have anti Spam laws and they can only contact you if you opt in. I also object to charities using offshore call centres where English is their second language.

So how about it Orcon, can I have my Caller ID back?

Luckily there's no term on that contract, so you'll feel free to move to another better ISP that will guarantee you Caller ID I suppose?

As an EX-Orcon customer.

I am love love loving Vodafone.

Not having any problems.  Took 4 days for them to switch my broadband over and 8 days total for homeline.

I am on leased telecom lines as Vodafone Red network is not in my area yet.  And I get over 4mbps

Have had faster downloads over p2p, my gaming has not been affected, and streaming youtube and TV ondemand is perfect.

I pay for ultimate and get 20gb traffic and can double my data for $30 for that month.  But I don't use over that.

I pay $90 p/m cheaper than Xtra, and yes I am also an EX-Xtra customer.  I did not leave them due to crappy service, just that their plans were too expensive.

Not very good then, eh?

I'm in Takapuna, Auckland, but when I tried to test with the Auckland server next, I believe my proxy tricked the test:

i'm considering switching to orcon / vodafone

Orcon silver Phone/Broadband 30gb - $99.95
Vodafone Red Ultimate 20gb - $90
the 30gb data cap at orcon is appealing but SPEED/PERFORMANCE is the biggest issue for me
Can anyone comment on how Orcon/Vodafone compare

at this stage then the only similar/suitable alternative I see is Vodafone Red Phone/Broadband

Either that or stay with telecom
I'll be staying with telecom this month & requesting a swap of plans from go large to the 20gb plan and see how that goes
Will switch to.. most probably Vodafone after that

I think KiwiPearls' post sums it up pretty well:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=82&TopicId=25394&page_no=3#167405

I have also recommended several people to sign up for Vodafone's Ultimate Pack in the past few weeks.  Without exception, they have all been very happy with the performance and value for money.

None of them were Geeky type people, they just wanted a standard phone and broadband.  For more clued-up people looking for Naked DSL, I would recommend Snap without hesitation.

I'm not on the ADSL2+ REd Network yet....so my speeds will only ever get better.

From what I've seen the best so far is Xtra, TelstraClear and Vodafone.  All other ISP's you see bad International Latecny posts.

Vodafone is the cheapest - Telecom was just too expenisve for a high bandwidth user.  And I do not know the TelstraClear pricing off by heart, but I recall it been slightly more than Vodafone.

guess it's settled then... will change telecom plan to the new 20gb FS/FS depending on what the rest of the family say or just swap straight over to Vodafone home/internet

Orcon Silver+ plan (5GB, FS/FS, Orcon+ network) = $79.95
25GB data addon = $20

Total: $99.95 for 30GB

I have been with Vodafone (Ihug) since 2003.  They used to have very good customer service.  But now, their customer service is very poor.  Try logging a problem, and they will reply only after 15 days to a month.  Try contacting them by phone, and they will put you on hold for 90 minutes.

Orcon@Home seems to be competetively price, but reading at this forum's "Orcons international performance" is giving second thoughts.  Are those performance issues resolved ?
