My current Orcon contract finished this month but I just cannot come up with a plausible reason to get this and that is annoying me.

is "so you can add your speedtest result to your geekzone signature" a good enough reason?

I don't do that now but bragging rights against Australian and UK based friends and family now that's a different story.

At this point teasing Australia about it's slow internet seems akin to cruelty :)

Why can't they make the current plans symmetrical instead of introducing these crazy, no real world use, symmetrical plans

Hi, GPon, unlike XGPon is not symmetric, ie 2.5G/1.25G

I read that the ONT will act as a router/modem

So if I signup to this for 12 months then downgrade to 1Gbps, are they going to replace the ONT with a standard one? Would I still need a router/modem if I downgrade to 1Gbps?

Hi, its a 7hr long Youtube segment, although BMarquis only spoke for around 15-20min on the matter, but yes the new ONT is XGPON only, so if you down grade to a 1G service the ONT will have to be swapped out.

It’s a bit early to define how we will handle downgrades.
At the moment, the XGS ONTs are very expensive. Like eye wateringly expensive.
Using them for a 1gbps or less service is a bit wasteful. There is, of course, a delicate trade off with a truck roll and associated impact to the end user who will need to be home for the ONT swap.

We have a few folks working on solutions.

But, why would you ever want to downgrade? ;) Hyperfibre is the future.

Well, considering Southern Cross Cable only has around 5Tbits lit capacity. 4gbps might not reach its full potential?

Most smaller ISP's don't even have 4Gbps of international bandwidth. So you won't see them offering this plan.

Even larger ones are offering it with caution as it takes only a few bad users to start congesting their network.

I can now get Fibre 4000 at my Wellington address. A couple of questions to an Orcon representative:

1. ETA on the install if I order it today?

2. Any plans to replace Google WiFi mesh with something quicker to take full advantage of the new speeds? eg. TP-Link x60.

3. If not can I return my Google WiFi and buy my own mesh for the new connection? Will that break my current contract/penalties?
