Question for 2°: Would you be here if you didn't get that Maori spectrum?

They have spectrum in other bands too - the GSM 900 band (which they got from Vodafone and MED in the last year or so and are using for their network now) as well as the GSM 1800 band (which they picked up in the 2GHz spectrum auction in 2000), so presumably yes!

I BOUGHT my 3.5G phone from a Vodafone dealer. Will I have to do anything (e.g. unlock) before using it with 2 Degrees? How do I find out if my phone is locked to the Vodafone network (rather than wait till I get the actual sim in 10 days or so)?

Vodafone doesn't lock handsets. You will have the Vodafone customisation there though, regardless of operator, unless you "de-brand" the handset - but that's all.

I see 2degrees have also reached agreement with Telecom Wholesale on Home Zone calling, that means when your at home you can use your mobile like a landline. What is the impact of this to Telecom and other fixed line providers? Surprised Telecom did the deal, I am.

Vodafone have a similiar deal, I guess it was just a matter of time before 2degrees got something too. 2degrees was originally asking for more (ie non-geographical) so maybe they've backtracked a little and just gone with a similiar thing to Vodafones arrangement?

I?ll be interested to see how that pans out. A few questions (which I know won?t be answered until 4th of August)

Will your whole family get to use their mobiles in the same home zone, or will you be restricted to only one number per home zone??
How big is the home zone?
Will calls from your home zone mobile to the local area count as local calls (and so be free)? What about TXTs?
If you want fixed line broadband, will you have to get Naked DSL?

Looking forward to seeing the pricing when it comes out.

"2 Degrees, for so long so coy about the detail of its offerings and its launch date, has finally broken cover, announcing it will go live for customers next Wednesday.

A media preview will kick off the launch, on Tuesday, with newly appointed CEO Eric Hertz unveiling 2 Degrees' full range of services, prices and handsets, at the new flagship Dick Smith store on Queen Street, a note received today says.

Thousands of people have registered for a free SIM card with $5 credit to try out the new network, the company says.

Vodafone immediately followed the 2 Degrees announcement with one of its own, offering what it descirbes as "New Zealand’s cheapest on account mobile-only plan"."

They didn't say it was the best. That would be the urReamed 10,000 plan which gets you unlimited voice minutes, unlimited TXTs and PXTs, 10Gb of data, and costs $10,000 per month.

Sorry - were you expecting that for $18.95?

I'll give 2degrees a go, but with them roaming on Vodafone WCDMA900 outside of metro areas, I think I'll stick with XT. More compatible with my iPhone.

It is $19 per month! They are already charging $10 for 100Mb, and that's not to say that is cheap, but that's what they have been and still charge!

It's going for the low end of the market, and they don't use data.
