SteveON: so, when are you guys (VF/TELE/2D) going to fix the whole porting system?
I have read so many places how annoying it is, it's just letting people down.

I have had no problems with telecom porting to 2degrees, these messages get through. Seems to be a
VF -> 2Degrees issue

With regards to your calls being diverted to voicemail, again I doubt this is a 2degrees problem but is a 'feature' of 2G networks, you cannot use cell data and have a voice call at the same time so if you're using Internet (or your iPhone is checking email) you won't receive the call as data is active and the calls are diverted to voicemail.

I did NOT know that!

That explains a lot of what was going on for me a couple of years back. Not relevant now....but definitely good to know.

Thanks!

It hadn't really come to notice of most people (even though it has always been the case) until the original iPhone was released.

IMO this was a major flaw in Apples decision to not release 3G on the first iPhone and lots of people got upset for not being able to receive calls due to the always on (well nearly, you didn't have to specifically log on to using data like with other phones) nature of the iPhone. Thankfully 3G doesn't have this restriction so all is good when connected via 3G

As you brought it into this topic I'd have thought it would have made sense to at least give a little info on how it relates instead of a pretty off the wall comment but I'll do just that and do a search myself.

I am disappointed about my move to 2Degrees too. I was with Vodafone and moved to 2Degrees last week due to its impressive prices. The number porting thingy only took 2 hours at night. Even I sat at the same table and did the same work in office, the signal has been much weaker. Whenever I moved my phone, it would start searching for network again. If I was lucky, after two minutes I would end up having one or at most two bars of signal strength, which was always full when with vodafone. I tried with another old phone but saw no difference. Today, I got no service at all. Not in office and not when I tried it outside. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing. Considering I don't use my phone that much (so the price really makes big different in my wallet), I might actually move back to vodafone.

All networks are different in different areas, if a network isn't good in an area where you want to use it most it really isn't any use to you at any cost so you are probably right and you'd be better moving back to Vodafone.

A wise thing to have done before switching networks would have been to have tried a friends 2degrees phone sim in your core locations, or just buy a 2 degrees sim and try that out before porting your number. That's what I would have done anyway, if It wasn't going to be much use to me I wouldn't have ported my number and would have only cost a few $ so wouldn't have been a great loss.

There's every chance you could go somewhere else and find 2degrees (or XT) has better reception. It's not as if the 2degrees reception is awful everywhere, it just isn't working where you need it most and there's not much point in using it that's the case.

It won't be a temporary thing unless you tell 2deg where the hole in their coverage is. Whether they have more cellsites in the works or can make some minor adjustments to an existing one is a defferent story.

The only problems I have had with 2deg so far are the international SMS issues. Why can't Vodafone just forward all messages to ported 021 numbers? I believe its an issue for the Commerce Commission to sort out...

Time to find a new industry!

I suggest you read the Saltys post. It explains things very well.

Yes I have read the post, however salty has also said:

SaltyNZ: //Opinion mode on: NZ number portability for SMS would be a lot more reliable for everyone if the carriers accepted the SMS messages in their networks using a specialised SMSC or IN service, and retransmitted the messages to the GSP via the national interconnect link. That would make SMS to ported numbers as reliable as voice calls
