Yes that is correct, The italk line does cost to have tho, They are only free on Naked BB.

You would then be paying for Homeline, Broadband and an additional iTalk line.

Ok I get it. Sounds that the best option, then, is to grab that free ATA from you and go VoIP on Naked BB and port my current number.

As for the reasons's Slingshot/Callplus aren't using theUCLF service despite winning a large confidential payout from Telecom over SLES - that's something only they can answer.

We do offer this service but it is only available in some areas,

i.e areas with Slingshot/Callplus owned MSAN's as oposised to wholesaled ones.

But this scenario is exactly where SLES should be used - to offer ULL voice from the exchange with UBA broadband from the cabinet.

I suspect the reasons for not using it come down solely to $

We offer it as a bundled service so our voice/Wholesale BB but this connection is on Vodafone Wholesale Voice and BB so the option of Vodafone wholesale voice / Wholesale BB is not available.

Thats the only reason, If they were connected to our equipment then i would do it.

Thats the only reason, If they were connected to our equipment then i would do it.

Nakedcity, have you heard of UFB or ultra fast broadband? With ultrafast broadband you will need to have an ATA to get a landline service so if anything you are already moving onto new technology. Calling rates should also be cheaper (no one mention the ONT stuff as this will just confuse him).

ATA should be $80 or so these days which is like 2 months line rental so a quick pay back.

Did Slingshot tell you they were moving you to a cabinet, or did it just happen.
If this happened to me, I would be PISSED and would be looking at moving to another ISP.

(Although someone will correct me and say its not Slighshots fault this has happened and they are not to blame .. and I can see how helpful they have been in this thread in trying to come up with a solution)

Hi NZKiwiman if you read the OP you will see that he suffered poor speeds as a result of the introdution of the cabinet, rang SS and they told him why and recommended the change to remedy the situation, which is the only and correct path of action.

Edit and can I also state that no its not SS's fault nor Chorus, the cabinetisation program has been very successful in raising the DSL performance across the country. There is still nothing other than $ stopping ISPs putting their own gear in cabinets, however the business case for individual ISPs to do this does not make it viable.

So I just had the Chorus guy in to reconnect me to another circuit...

Here are my new ADSL line stats:

So that is indeed quite a bit better.

But...it seems that the modem is holding me back slightly as it only goes up to 8Mbps. The Chorus tech said his handheld test unit showed an attainable line speed of 10 Mbps and that a modem upgrade might get me another 1 Mbps. I see on the modem stats that it sees an attainable line speed of 9.28 Mbps (slightly lower than 10).

The modem is a Dynalink RTA1320.

Edit: actually, the modem should support ADSL2 up to 10 Mbps and ADSL2+ right up to 24 Mbps according to the specs I downloaded. I guess I am not getting ADSL2+ at my location? I'll try and update the firmware...

Hi, a line attenuation of 9dB and its holding back to 14.5dB noise margin, sounds like the either the modem is dodgy or something else, but should be good for 15-16Mb/s if not more.

It really annoys me off when people start trashing the Chourus FTTN deployment. Telecom spent $1 billion delivering one of the world's best FTTN deployments at the request of the Government and have delivered 10Mbps minimum sync speeds to just over 80% of NZ homes & businesses. Around 50% of those (ie around 40% in total) are close enough to a cabinet or exchange ISAM to have access to VDSL delivering up to 50Mbps down and 10Mbps up

NZ currently has vastly superior infastructure to those 80% than most other countries - even Australia comes nowhere close. In this case cabinetisation will always nearly mess with a ULL connection since the midspan interference issues caused by having a xDSL DSLAM/MSAN/ISAM closer to the customer will cause higher attenuation for copper carrying DSL signals originating in the ULL gear in the exchange.

Nothing prevents any ISP from installing their equipment in cabinets except for the financial outlay and the fact there is no way you could ever build a viable business case. Prices for access are regulated by the Commerce Commission, but there mere outlay of a minimum of $20k - $30k worth of gear and ongoing monthly costs for backhaul to supply a handful of cutomers in every cabinet dosn't stack up. Even if you were somebody big like TelstraClear that might equate to 30 customers maximum from a cabinet which is just simply not viable.

90% of people on ULL connections who are cabinetised will receive vastly superior connections being on Wholesale rather than ULL and IMHO ISP's should have automatically migrated customers. Those who didn't are doing their customers an injustice by willingly letting them receive a substandard service.

And don't get my started about home wiring..

Sounds like they have already moved your connection to terminate on Chorus equipment in the cabinet rather than pass through to Vodafone equipment in the exchange now.

This is what I would do next:

1: Buy a dsl master filter and ~10 scotch locs off trademe, ~$28-30
2: Install that in your wiring to replace the solder/split, it's quite easy
3: Take up Joe's offer of free ATA
4: Get slingshot to port your number to italk and change you to naked adsl

Yep - I'll get rid of that splice first and see what that changes, then I'll look at getting a master filter.

I've taken Joe up on the offer of the ATA and he is going to port my number to iTalk.

I'll also upgrade my router's firmware to the latest.

+1 everything you said but on this part I dissent a bit

From memory the way backhaul cost is split between providers in a cabinet seems insane to me.

IIRC it's backhaul cost / number of providers, so in a two provider situation provider B pays 50% of the backhaul cost even if they don't have 50% of the customers, so you could have 10% of customers in a cabinet yet pay 50% of the backhaul cost!

Seems like a major disincentive for ISP's to get into sub loop unbundling, also the ComCOM Sub loop determinations took forever, came out years later that LLU meaning it was simply way too late.

Some ISP's, mostly in rural providers have taken up sub LLU and have gear in cabinets... probably only viable when they have near or over 50% of customers in a cabinet area.

Of course if the ISPs would get together and put a single piece of kit in for all their customers then I am sure the sums would stack up and make it viable. But I expect they would rather run to the com com and cry about it instead of work with what they have.
