Oh .. I should note that I have had the occasional off-peak time when VPN speeds were unrestricted and I got 2 MB/sec as well, but those times were rare - once or twice per week. So I gave up and stopped using VPN.

We peer directly with Google in Sydney for YouTube traffic, and we host their caches in our network.

Our current upstream provider for our transtasman connectivity is unable to meet our bandwidth demands, so we are in the process of shifting to a more suitable provider. This will occur mid to late next month, at which time YouTube should be running unconstrained during peak times again. If you hit the cache (popular clips) you should already be unconstrained.

We were disappointed our previous provider couldn't meet out bandwidth demands, but once this is resolved we will be back to scaling bandwidth with user growth.

Does that have anything to do with why you've recently picked up some GGI transit, or was that because pacnet are wanting to get out of NZ? Or perhaps due to using XT now instead of Vodafone for mobile?

I've had no problems with FTP downloads, seem to get between 3-9Mbits/s depending on what time of the day I download.

I've been using Cuteftp with 4 threads to transfer files from a server in the Netherlands.

Quick update on my experiences with this plan, I'm still very happy with it. Download speeds are consistently around 1M/byte per second between 2am and 6pm. Between 6pm and 2am it slows to around 200-300 K/bytes per second for downloads.

Little FYI for those interested,

Unlimited at $60 is now a standard plan, it comes with a 12 month contract and a free 1 port modem like all other BB plans.

Quite impressed/surprised at the call center today. I called up to ask about switching to unlimited from 100gb plan, in particular contract implications. The guy practically tried to talk me out of it, as he warned me about traffic shaping. Obviously I had done my research on this thread first, and am happy with shaping, but I was quite impressed that he explained it to me, rather than just signing me up to pay them more money.

Hi There,

We are in central newmarket (in an apartment building) and have had slingshot unlimited for quite a while. The speeds we get are generally pretty bad (slower than my 3G data on my Vodafone phone).

Is there any way we can get our line looked into, I guess I should be calling Slingshot customer service. I am sure there is a way to up the speeds a little?

Can't complain really considering we get unlimited data cap :)

Hello slingshot and everyone

I am currently on a caped 250+homeline plan with slingshot. I am quite happy with speed and 250GB is enough for me.
However, I found myself mostly use cellphone and rarely use home phone. So i am thinking switch to naked unlimited plan in order to save 50 dollars per month.

I found some people are complaining about speed issues with slingshot unlimited plan.

My questions are:
1. I can watch vods and live streams from youtube, justinTV etc in 480/720p with minor/no lag issues now, can I do the same if i switch to naked unlimited plan?(I mean anytime regardless of peak hour)

2.My download speed is 1.2MB/sec via http and 500-1000KB/sec via p2p now. And speed doesn't seem to be affected by peak/non-peak or working day/ weekend. I can accept slower download speed with unlimited plan, but it has to be reasonable like down to 200-500KB/sec in most time. I can not accept constantly below 100/sec. Will unlimited plan meet my need?

3. Browsing websites and gaming online are also relatively fast now, can unlimited plan provide the same?

I am in Auckland central, an apartment building.

Alternatively can I switch to naked broadband with my current 250 data cap?

1. Streaming offpeak can be iffy personally myself i struggle watching 720p+ content via Twitchtv but Youtube is ok sometimes it will run at 1.6mb/s at 720 higher but 360 is like 100kb/s or less and buffs alot.

2. P2P traffic is shaped after 6pm i think so you wont get full speed i get about 250kb/s really depends
3. gaming is fine i havent had an issue then again gaming doesn require alot of bandwidth

Im still waiting on what the slingshot did with the list of people that where having speed issues

Hi,

The unlimited plan is designed so customers can fully utilize streaming, browsing, voip and gaming at full speed. P2P traffic is prioritised and you will notice a drop in this. Saying this, People with issues raised here generally have something else involved, I.E a fault or some wrong configuration on the Slingshot or user end.

I personally use the Unlimited plan, P2P traffic is fine. I turn it off when i'm doing anything online to make sure I'm unaffected.

Gaming is always fine and not affected whatsoever ( I play League of Legends, Battlefield 3, Team Fortress 2 with no lag or ping issues).

Hi,

Streaming will be fine, some users have advised twitch tv has issues but I have had no examples to investigate this further.

Once you go to Naked Broadband, the phone line is disconnected. If you want to go back you need to have it reconnected, it can be done but there is a $50 charge to go back. You can always take out Unlimited on the landline/broadband bundle, this way you can try it for a few months without fear of losing the landline. The only issue here really is, we no longer offer the 250GB plan, so if you move off this, you won't be able to get that back.

P2P is dependent on lots of things, such as seeders and out prioritisation. As long as the bandwith is not required by yourself or other users on the network (such as off peak and overnight especially) it will go more or less full speed. Some customers on Unlimited are doing more than 1TB a month download/upload. My own Unlimited connection has done 3.4GB per hour consistently when I have qued it up.
