We've only had ours 3 or 4 years I would assume it has 3G

Has been for best part of a year now, in some places. It will get more widespread until the big day arrives and the last 2G carriers are turned off, and then it will be everywhere.

I can also confirm that 2Degrees is already using some 900MHz in the Clevedon area.  This was actually back in July 2017.  Look forward to seeing 2Degrees convert more 2G frequencies to 4G in the near future :)

Smart meters will probably move straight to the LTE iot standards rather than 3g. It's made for that sort of telemetry stuff.

Obviously 2DM are repurposing 900MHz freed up by the 2G shutdown for LTE due to LTE's better spectral efficiency.

Does anyone know if 2DM (or NZ Telco's in general) are also ditching 3G in the 900MHz band in favour of 900MHz LTE? I am worried that if 900MHz goes entirely to LTE and voice is relegated to 2100MHz, voice coverage could deteriorate.

@tripper1000 VodafoneNZ is as well would not surprise me if some sites are already live with 900Mhz LTE, They have been doing 10Mhz of 2100Mhz for LTE for quite a while now

No way at this stage will the full 900Mhz be used for LTE I can't see that happening in the next 8 years

No, UMTS on 900MHz will remain for the forseeable future. But given the upswing in data usage, everyone gets more bang for their buck if there is an LTE carrier and a UMTS carrier in the available spectrum block, as opposed to 2 UMTS carriers.

This is where VodafoneNZ and Spark have a huge advantage over 2Degrees in spectrum allocation but I have been using 2Degrees for a about 4 months now and no issues at all and I am seeing a lot more CA LTE coverage around in the last 2 - 3 months and I suspect after middle of March we will see a lot lot more

being that 2G have VoWiFi live, their core is reasonably kitted for VoLTE.

Would not surprise if VoLTE moves over before 2D switch 900 off. at which point, they are making more effective use of the spectrum anyway.

Besides, GSM is a massive waste of bandwidth realistically.

That's a pretty safe assumption.
