I just rewatched the ad and see your point.

It would be really sad to not have the favourite/mate/family options. Even if they (say, and I think it would be impossible), got the calling rate down to 49c per minute flat rate 24/7 to any network, many would still be better off on Vodafone or Telecom choosing "all you can eat" plans to talk to their girlfriends and such.

Yes, thats the case, will always be cheaper to do on network, so i think that it will just become a case of carrying 3 phones not 2...

The whole rort of termination rates needs to be sorted out sooner rather than later: The idea that you should know what network you are calling in the days of number portability is frankly ridiculous.

There's no way we can be expected to know if an 027, 021, 029 or 022 number is on one network or another.

anyway - I digress:

2degrees - make data a priority and make it cheap - you'll get all the tetherers signing up in a flash.

I have seen several places now that data is not going to be a big priority for them as only a small %
of the country use mobile data. It appears they are hitting the lower end of the scale market
Like prepay customers etc

There's a new boy on the block, a new mobile phone company, and it's spending hundreds of millions of dollars to get your business. It's called 2DEGREES and it's going head to head with Vodafone and Telecom. But does more competition mean lower prices, better deals? That's what market observers have been promising but can the providers deliver?

On-net pricing by 2 degrees would be hypocritical since they unsuccessfully tried to ban the practice.

As for their pricing, I'm guessing any time, any network will, at least initially be about 80c/min, with no changes in the first year.

How do you deduce this pricing? On what basis did you make this hypothesis?

Ive got more faith in twodegrees than that. I think they will be cheaper than 80c/min

Your deductions make sense and I too was not expecting anything less than 79c/min (sadly).

I am hoping to be very pleasantly surprised.

So you think 2 degrees will not look at Bestmate/favourites/family type plans? To me this would really slow uptake from those in the population with boyfriends/girlfriends/husbands/wives.

About 2 years ago, when it was announced that Orcon was going to be a virtual provider, the news article said that they would be charged 30c/min.  Now suppose that *all* of 2 degrees calls were using Vodafones cell towers, and include the 15 c/min charge that Telecom/Vodafone charge for terminating calls, the maximum 2 degrees would be charged was 45c/min.  In fact 2 degrees would be charged 60c/min for calls from 2 degrees to 2 degrees using Vodafones cell towers.

This 30c charge has probably dropped since then, but I'm thinking that 50c/min seems to be the base price that roughly would get charged to 2 degrees for calls made from Vodafones towers.

Now of course, they have their own cell towers, but this cost 200 million, which needs to be a source of income, so I'm thinking that their own 'cost' to themselves for each minute would still, at least initially be about 50c/min.

The competition are charging 90c/min, let's pretend that the cost is 50c/min, it would be stupid to go for a low price in the hope that they'd get more customers, after all, remember if 2 degrees gets lots of customers then Vodafone will be making more money, at least initially.  It seems to take 2 years for cellphone towers to be put up (based on how long 2 degrees have been complaining).

So I think there will be a drop by 10c/min each year, at least for the first 2 years, from then on probably only 5 cents a year.

Of course this is all guesswork, but do you remember a time when increased competition resulted in prices suddenly dropping a lot?

Another thing to consider is what happens when 2 degrees gets lots of customers? They have 850 MHz but not many cellphones work on that frequency, at least now. Vodafone sold them some 900 MHz allocation but I can't see VF selling them some more. They have some higher frequency allocation (can't remember the frequency) but that will require closer cell sites. In other words, they aren't after too many customers just right now.
