Ok I have just flipped a 2degrees sim into my Nexus One, based in the city, corner Albert St & Wellesley, and I have nothing but EDGE. Quite poor speeds actually, signal strength is -73db, so all 5 bars, but only getting 0.07 Mbps down ...

Hey @langi27 - we've started to open up parts of our 3G network for testing. This is why some lucky customers i.e @manhinli has been able to give it a whirl this afternoon. You'll be pleased to know that our testing is going well and if you keep an eye on your phone you might find your area also gets opened up to 3G testing over the coming weeks.

Cheers!

I just tried my vodem with a 2 degrees sim card and the un vodafone branded Join Air software and it locked onto the 2 degrees 3G and i could use it perfectly, i didn't do a speed test but it was way better than Edge and the blue and aqua lights where on all the time so i am really happy.

I ditched vodafone on my phone the instant 2 degrees started but have had to stick with vodafone to use the vodem as the 2 degrees data was way too slow, now i can't wait for 2 degrees to fully launch 3G and i will set fire to my last vodafone sim card.

I am getting the 3G in Bexley in Christchurch

From what I've observed yesterday, only the Southern parts of Auckland are 3G enabled. Central Auckland is still EDGE only. Not sure about Northern Auckland.

The border seems to follow their LAC (area code) boundary between LAC 2 (Central Auckland) and LAC 3 (Southern Auckland).

I think this is the case because on my way from Avondale to Pakuranga yesterday on the train/bus I noticed 3G dropping after the Mt Albert boundary and reganing service before the Panmure boundary.

I've made a map of what I suspect is the approxmate extent of 3G coverage. Of course I have no idea if LAC 1 (North Shore) has 3G so I've left that out until I get postitive reports from the North Shore.

Would be interested to know if this is actually the case as I'm not sure if the 2G LAC codes still applies to the 3G network as I don't have a 3G phone with network engineering mode.

Still EDGE in the Wellington CBD.  My phone has shown the 3G icon for a second or two once and then gone back to EDGE.

Nup no Hamilton towers at this stage, all I can ever find is Vodafone 2/3g and Telecom 3g

Tho i'm guessing 3g roaming won't happen until 3g launch date so can't jump ahead and test like everyone else

Who would have thought we'd be getting excited just over getting access to 3G in 2010!

Weird, 2º 3G Data seems to be working on my Magic, it's connected to a 2º Cellsite and at 3G too...

EDIT: Seems I was a tester (Christchurch, Avonhead). Still am picking up 3G data though. (I use Vodafone, just was trying out Edge Performance)
