daksta: I pm'd mark about getting on the trial, got no response. Am connected to auckland city exchange which has vdsl2

I believe I'm also connected to the City exchange but unsure of the distance. Guess I'll just have to wait and see when Snap announces their retail plans but i'll be keen to jump onto their service!

lokeynz: Are all connections set to profile 8b by default? Does the line just need to meet certain criteria to be changed to 17a or will it be sold as an optional upgrade?

Profile changed - you are syncing at 70mbit down now! (with a potential attainable of 80Mbit) note this profile only really works well if you are really close to the cabinet - say less than 200-300 meters, although on good copper maybe a little further.

Also sorry guys, we are only running the pilot on existing Snap customers with business services for the moment, we dont have any timeframes for a Res launch or pilot just yet.

No worries, atleast you are proactive in testing vdsl unlike some other ISP's. Give us a holler when/if you are looking for testers on res plans.
85kB up is painful, tbh I dont care about faster down speed, just want and need faster up speeds.

How does that compare to ADSL2?

Not sure, have't tried it yet, just going off the pre-qual results from telecom's wireline, which doesn't mean much.

rough guide:

Download Rate Range : ADSL2+: 12.8 - 13.5 Mb/s, VDSL2: 15.6 - 14.1 Mb/s
Upload Rate Range : ADSL2+: 1.1 - 1.1 Mb/s, VDSL2: 2.2 - 1.3 Mb/s

Currently syncing at 15mbps/1mbps on ADSL2+ at the moment, so may get a slight improvement. I'd say I'm around about 1KM ish from the cabinet, hard to tell exactly how long the cables are.

Bandwidth (Down/Up - kbit/s): 68096/10350

The upstream SNR is 33dB so looks like there's potential for a fair bit more upload if/when Telecom unleash it.
Is there also a 50mb downstream limit? I've only managed to crack the 50mbps mark once on speedtest.
I don't think it's a router throughput issue, the Thomson is in bridge mode with a Mikrotik Router handling the PPPoE and NAT, CPU stays under 50% during the speedtest.

Definitely not complaining, the extra upload speed is what we needed, anything else is just a bonus.

This 10mbps upload limit thing is so stupid. What difference does it make to telecom Wholesale whether your downloading or uploading, your paying for the same handover at the end of the day... I can see this being useful for people wanting the higher upload than ADSL

Because the speeds for upload are all round fairly limited, so if everyone had full upload then lots of people would be left with painfully slow uploads while some had insanely fast ones.

ISP's normally have domestic/international transit that is symmetrical ie: same rate up and down so I would argue it's purely a "business decision" to limit upload.

can I beg, borrow, buy a cellpipe modem for VDSL service here ? If someone can point me in the right direction for a vdsl modem compatible with telecom cabinets that would be great. thanx.
