You definitely make some good points. While it appears the intention from Snap is certainly a good one in this instance you do have to wonder how this will evolve over time.

I feel it is a difficult place for the consumer though, I have to admit I'm 'guilty' of supporting this myself. The amount of data we can chew through on youtube alone in a month can be quite staggering. Which makes this offer very appealing in the short term; balancing up the cost of using 20GB of data on youtube as opposed to paying the $2/month, particularly here in NZ where data caps aren't the largest, coupled with more and more video content appearing daily. But yes the net neutrality angle is definitely something to consider.

On the other hand, 'unlimited' plans have of course been tried in the past, only to be canned due to sustainability/performance problems. While perhaps not the best implementation as far as net neutrality goes, I'm sure this is also [partly] intended to stop it simply becoming another big time?

Is the unlimted You Tube add-on available on the older plans.
Not looking at moving to the new plans because I lose 5GB a month if I do.

$2 for unlimited Youtube is a damn good deal. Hope their backhaul etc can cope with it. I go through around 15-20GB of Youtube every month, mostly at peak time and in 720P. even if it is hosted locally I can imagine that sort of usage could put severe constraints on the network

Apparently there were problems in rolling this out. I emailed them asking why this YouTube addon didn't appear to be on my account and they replied:

Hi Geoff,
We are still waiting to have this feature enabled by our engineers,
Sadly we don't have a ETA for this service currently but we hope to have it on in the next couple of days.

We thank you for your patience.

Xbox Live content and Steam would be good ones for me to be unmetered too. I've got a UK Xbox with a UK Live account and its often cheaper for me to purchase games from Live than either order from the UK or from retailers here in NZ.

Hi

Could someone from Snap confirm what these all you can eat add on's cover. I use Google apps, calendar, documents, mail etc frequently. Are they covered? Also with the Youtube one does this include embedded videos on other sites.

I signed up with them a couple of months ago as a back-up naked DSL line. My usual Internet source up to then was over a 3KM Wi-Fi Internet link with Xtra on the end of it at a broadcast studio.

Youtube/Google is $2 so I've been giving it a go on Snap.

I only use about 5-10GB a month at my end of the Wi-Fi link, so to see how much Video and Google stuff I do personally, I routed all of my own traffic to the Snap line since last months billing anniversary.

I've used about 1.06GB for everything else in the three and bit weeks. The rest is Youtube. The other stuff is mainly PDF manuals for broadcast/communicatinos equipment (bulky PDFs).

I haven't tried it in HD for a great length of time. I only watch 360p on my netbook (has intergrated AMD/Radeon GPU for HD/MP4 video decoding on a 1GHz dual-core) or on my desktop. Next I wouldn't mind an iPhone4, since it has Wi-Fi and handles 360p real nice! Better picture than my other machines.

I had some teething probs with signing up as they were re-modelling their website at the time. It didn't automatically add Youtube service even though I ticked it, or sync'd my invoicing with visa debit charge dates correctly, but they've resolved anything pretty quickly and overall pretty happy with the service, especially their customer service.

I get 5GB on the base account, then just purchase in blocks of data on top as a top up when needed, the more data the bigger the discount.

Doing a trace route, everything Google and Youtube resolves to some caches in NZ. Just before the target cache, it shows a route through Telstraclear. If it's their Google cache, even better!

But I've had it since June and am pretty wrapped with it. Xtra just don't cut the mustard over Snaps customer service.

I don't think thats right, have just emailed them....

The actual data comes from cache.l.google.com and should resolve to an address in 202.124.127.0/24 in Snap's network - those other address won't actually be serving the video data in most cases - in anycase it's still included in the all you can eat when coming from the TCL cache
