Ok, that's odd.
I reboot my modem and could not get internet any more at all.
Just to try I change the modem to PPPoA LLC instead of PPPoA VC-MUX and now I have internet again.
If I change it back my internet drops, I have good syc but no PPP light. So on PPPoA LLC it works.
I have always had the modem on PPPoA VC-MUX and thought that is the right setting but now I don't know, BTW I am on Slingshot better network gear.

Can someone from Slingshot tell me the correct modem settings for their better network gear?

That's unusual, I haven't seen LLC work before.

The correct modem settings should be
PPPoA VC-MUX
VPI: 0
VCI: 100
MTU: 1492

Has anyone switch from capped to unlimited or vice versa recently and had good or bad thing to say about the unlimited?

I'm currently on the old 250GB plan. I usually use more then 120GB per month but rarely 250GB and I sometimes just push it with stuff I suspect and generally decide is junk and delete. So I'm considering switching to unlimited to save the $10, and probably download less on average although also not have to worry if I end up downloading more. Of course, once I've changed I can't go back.

I've been with Slingshot for a long time (2009 I think) although never on an unlimited plan so been through a lot, school holiday disasters, extreme Youtube streaming problems, extreme slowdowns (like 10-50k) at certain times for torrents and most bulk downloads etc. Also some other problems like TVNZ and TV3 streaming problems although I never worked out if it was definitely Slingshot. (TV3 problems I heard happened to someone using Orcon so it may not primarily be Slingshot.) Annoying at times but still worth it for the data (for me). Yet service recently has seemed to be decent even during school holidays. (Yes I know Slingshot tends to be a bit cyclical but it just seems to have improved a fair amount recently more then the normal cycles.)

So I'm wondering if I'm setting myself up for disappointment again. It may not be as good, but I'd prefer something generally useable without getting annoyed which hasn't always been the case for Slingshot.

I honestly have nothing bad to say about Slingshot Unlimited. I switched from Xnet Naked Torrent Plan ($69.65 for Voip phone line and 75 gigs offpeak (2am-8am)) I had to pay for every meg I used on peak and every meg I used off peak that was over the 75gig.

Last month I downloaded 410gig, no complaints about speed or streaming, and I didn't have to wait for off peak or schedule anything.

I don't have any reason to discourage you.

I personally went the other way Unlimited to 250G plan I noticed only a slight improvement in downloading non-attended traffic during peak times but I'm very happy to wait for downloading.

Auckland CBD - Better Network - 15mbit/2mbit sync:
At the time when I run this speedtest I had a few things running so the true line rates were a little off.

Sorry, Slingshot not your fault seems to be my modem at fault.
It's only about 4 months old, TP-link TD-8840T.
I did get it it to work on VC-MUX or LLC but it disconnets all the time.
It's a pity because it is very fast on Annex M.
It has a 3 year warranty so might send it back.
FYI I have discovered that this gem of a modem/router does do bridge mode, it has been said on Geekzone that it does not but it does, must be some sort of PPPoA to PPPoE bridge as I connect the tomato router with PPPoE and it gets an external IP.
Actually for me the Unlimited broadband plan has been very good, thanks for a great plan.

You can use PPPoE on the "Better Network" gear - so you may as well use a full-bridge.

Ah that explains it then.
I am using full bridge mode.....so does not do half bridge and anything on Chorus won't work on full bridge.

Thanks for the info. on speeds with the Unlimited versus 250 gb plans. I'm on the 250 plan and I find it really good. Sometimes I think of switching to Unlimited but I have never used my whole 250 yet so haven't got a huge incentive to switch.
BTW if you want a good basic wired modem I can recommend the D-Link 526B. This has worked flawlessly for me with two different motherboards and 2 brands of DVD drive. The CD based wizard setup is very very easy to use.
5 minutes or less to set-up and that includes the modem re-booting.

Hi,

Your actual Line Synch Rate is rather average, this is not something that your plan or provider will have any effect on, however things like modems, filters, jackpoints, phone cable (from modem to jackpoint) will.

I would suggest the first step is trying these things and seeing if we can lift your line potential.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

There is only 3 jack points in the house, 2 that are in use and have filters on them.
I might be able to test another modem later tonight, just to see if it's the modem.
