tilde: i think the reason you are getting a bit of friendly stick in the replies is because, quite simply, you aren't the hapless non-techie individual that you claim to be regarding smartphones. when your previous posts talks about home wifi serving up media content, having one's own domain name etc. people here assume that you are more of a techie than the general public who genuinely doesn't know.

which is backed up by the latest quote that you don't want "bloatware" on your phone, yet you propose that a random salesperson with no history of your usage suggest certain apps to mirror what you currently have? isn't that a bit of a contradiction?

using car analogies that don't match further adds to the situation. the equivalent of "When I buy a new car the dealer will take my kids car seat out and put it in the new car, they will do the same with my CD player or at least move the CDs from one stacker to the next." is "the sales person takes the SIM card from your existing phone, and puts it into the new phone and powers it on making sure it works"

the bit about having to do paperwork instead of teaching you to use the device analogy is also wrong. the equivalent to a car dealer would be if you had a bought a car on HP/car loan, and the car dealer is sitting down with you completing your paperwork rather than teaching you how to drive.

i'm not entirely certain at this point you aren't trolling for bites...

ps. you don't have the time to research a $1500 investment, that you use often? maybe that dollar amount is chump change to you, but it's not that hard to spend half hour on geekzone or the internet to figure out what works for you...

You're quite right. I do know more than the average Joe about this tech.

The point is that I keep finding this to hard, and if someone like me finds it to hard then we really need to have a rethink, in my view.

I haven't been about on GZ for months because I've been busy off with other things.

I didn't just drop in here to have a troll.

I dropped back in to express a few views on the mobile space because it managed to just make me grumpy.

I tried to respond to comments of others because they were kind enough to share a view.

I do see what you're saying and yes, if you're thinking that perhaps I've just got a bit wound up about this issue, then you're likely right.

I do get wound up about this stuff.

I've been a computer programmer for 30 or more years. I know what we can do with computers and it really just gets up my nose when we use computers to make our lives harder than easier!

My biggest question is why you were expecting so much service from Harvey Norman? Why wouldn't you just go into a 2degrees store instead? I'm sure they'd have the expertise to be able to help you, and would probably do it pro-actively as well. Would you have expected the same if you were in The Warehouse?

This is where I think you're wrong; looking over your post history, you seem to have a large amount of issues - most of which are actually quite simple.

As a whole, we don't need to have a rethink...training perhaps, but then again, it's reasonable to expect someone to do research before they buy a product worth a reasonable amount of money. A significant majority of "techies" can jump into things like this with no issues; From a consumer PoV plans, devices and related paraphernalia are easier than ever to understand.

The carrier isn't to blame here. We all are, me included.

My expectations were just beyond what the market delivers.

I actually have an answer to this problem.

Have you thought of using WiFi instead of mobile data? Seriously I leave WiFi on ALL THE TIME. I used to think "Let's save battery, turn WiFi off" but really we have to think "Let's same money, TURN WIFI ON".

My mobile data usage dropped by 50%.

Please do not consider public discussions on Geekzone as "Chatham House Rule". It is not.

First, here's the original source: Chatam House Rule, not the ammended Wikipedia version. Second it's "Rule", not "Rules". There's only one.

The rule says "When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed."

This means people outside the meeting knows about the information but don't know who disclosed it.

Posting in a public forum does not qualify for the rule when we clearly know where Simon, John and Peter work (are these Apostles?).

I am just posting this as a warning that people have lost their jobs for posting things they shouldn't. If someone could/should disclose something, perhaps the best way would be to talk to me and we can see if it's appropriate and how to do it (whistleblower)

My comment was only around the spirit of the conversation in that I considered it welcome in this thread, in context with this discussion, to have a general 'chit chat' around the industry issues around general mobile frustration and that I would not be getting bothered by the really quite helpful comments that people from other providers are dropped in.

I was really thinking in terms of the general spirit of the whole Chatham House Rule concept, which to me is about just being open to express a view without condemnation.

Not this thread was not intended as a troll at all. It was simply a bit of a vent about the issues in the mobile space currently and just how complex it's got.

Now for a little perspective here...

I was again in the mall this afternoon with one of my 2dgrees customers. He couldn't send a text message to another friend who we were to meet.

His brand new alcaltel phone just would not send the message to the contact he had selected.

Points for the first person who figures it.

I had no idea.

The 2Degrees guy spotted the answer in under 5 seconds.

I setup my mates iPhone 5 that I sold him. This thread (I think) led me to believe that 2D will get carrier updates. Not so, but thats ok.I set the APN's. I sent a 13MB video via iMessage and it never arrived. I got that iMesaage from my daughter. That was Telecom to Telecom. I work for Telecom, but can Salty or other provide any help?

Yes, there are carrier updates. I found on my wife's phone though that I had to update her to 7.0.4 before it noticed. Mine was already on 7.0.4 when they became available and it got them immediately.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!
