Most practical is that you can talk on the phone and use data at the same time - something that wasn't the case with EDGE/GRPS.

I was always told this but I never had a problem receiving texts when on data or voice call with 2degrees. When I was on VF years ago and just had GPRS It was an issue... Maybe my data sessions aren't open long enough.?

I have used GPRS before it was launched to public many years ago and never have had issue sending and receiving SMS while device was in packet switched data session.
For a start generally SMS do not get transmitted over the GPRS time slots on 2G
GSM / GPRS / WCDMA all use standard protocols.
During a packet session on GPRS if a voice call comes in the session is paused and then resumed after that call ends

I think on GPRS/EDGE the data conneciton gets *paused* (i.e. no data transfer occurs for the duration of the call) wheras on UMTS it runs concurrently with voice calls etc so your downloads etc continue to run. I stand to be corrected on this though.
@johnr: I'm no big fan of Vodafone (as has been documented here quite a few times!) but much of the issue I have are with the 'people' aspect of your services (e.g. customer service). The 'techinical' side has been nearly flawless for me. So I understand where you're coming from -- things work just the same (mostly) on all network.
