Most practical is that you can talk on the phone and use data at the same time - something that wasn't the case with EDGE/GRPS.

I was always told this but I never had a problem receiving texts when on data or voice call with 2degrees. When I was on VF years ago and just had GPRS It was an issue... Maybe my data sessions aren't open long enough.

I have used GPRS before it was launched to public many years ago and never have had issue sending and receiving SMS while device was in packet switched data session.
For a start generally SMS do not get transmitted over the GPRS time slots on 2G

GSM / GPRS / WCDMA all use standard protocols.

During a packet session on GPRS if a voice call comes in the session is paused and then resumed after that call ends. Vodafone NZ have dedicated GPRS time slots on every single 2G cell which many networks around the world do not do.

That's what I thought, but I was told otherwise... I think it was when I was on the phone I would have to wait till after the call till I received any text messages. But it was such a long time ago it may have been in the 2G only days.

Since I have been on 3g for the past 5+ years it hasn't been an issue. (if you can call Telecom's old CDMA network 3G)

I think on GPRS/EDGE the data conneciton gets *paused* (i.e. no data transfer occurs for the duration of the call) wheras on UMTS it runs concurrently with voice calls etc so your downloads etc continue to run. (Edited: I note that @johnr explained this already. My bad.)

@johnr: I'm no big fan of Vodafone (as has been documented here quite a few times!) but much of the issue I have are with the 'people' aspect of your services (e.g. customer service). The 'techinical' side has been nearly flawless for me. So I understand where you're coming from -- things work just the same (mostly) on all network.

VF is great but I cant stand the Customer Service and the ways that prepay tend to get better deals at times than OC. Ill never forget when prepay had $2 for an hour to any VF but when I was paying $30-60 on a plan there was no option. Things may have changed since though.
