walt12: To all those complaining about broadband zones, tell me this:

Given these are utilising Vodafone's network, and are effectively an MVNO in these areas, how could you possibly have expected them to be able to offer the same sort of rates they can offer off their own network?

In fact to attempt to do so would be hugely unprofitable and would likely delay their ability to rollout their own network into the areas in which you live ... be reasonable people ...

also being the only one with a network apart from Vodafone and Telecom; 2degrees are the only ones that can offer cheaper prices, that MVNOs never will be able to

Any posts are personal comments and not that of my employer

I'm on their 50MB plan and their 3G is faster than what I got on 3G VF 2 years ago, I have no idea what it it like these days...

They are not an 'effective MVNO' but they are roaming on Vodafone. Very very different.

True, although the billing arrangements work out more or less the same for MVNO vs. Roaming at a high level: Vodafone sends wholesale rated CDRs and a bill.

But how come MVNO's can offer decent data and Bestmates/other vodafone goodies?

You "+1" to this and yet a only a matter of days ago you crticised me when I "ignored" 2degrees 3G in an analysis of mobile plans because their 3G network was not confirmed and looking likely to be in certain "zones" only. Just saying.

Am I right to assume that the costs would be the same? If we were to look at overseas provider roaming on VF, the price is the order of the equivalent of $20/MB (e.g SingTel roaming on VF).

Right, so MVNO is on its home network at all times, 2 degrees are roaming, in all cases this is normally more costly.  I have no doubt there is a "special" deal, along the lines of the rumoured and leaked MTR deal that Vodafone struck with 2 degrees at the insistence of Cunliffe, however that does not avoid the fact that servicing customers via their own network will be cheaper to 2 degrees than servicing them via Vodafone's.  And this wholesale price will be a factor in what they can offer for data outside of their own network.

Yeah but you worded it differently, and its just annoying how people keep on going on about this. 2degrees have a 60/40 mix of traffic on-net/roaming. Anyway I live in Wellington so the broadband regions don't bother me unless I am on holiday.

That is understandable, but it still sucks :(

Especially if you live in or frequently go outside their "broadband zones"

Also how will they handle roaming if you're just outside or switch off 2d's towers while in the middle of a bunch of data transfers.. I can see some surprised/angry customers using casual data rates when they thought they were on the 2d's data bundles..

Some questions about the new 3g network I'd be interested to find out:

Is there some sort of indication that you're roaming? What happens if you are in one of the main centres but in a 2 degrees dead spot? do you revert to VF roaming? Or is the coverage in the zones pretty good?

How did I word it?

SteveON:
ahmad: According to leaked retailer information 3G will only be in 2 Degrees "zones". Furthermore their CSRs are advising the information they currently can reveal says that 3G won't be available roaming on Vodafone (eg. in Dunedin). If that changes fine but at their currently data pack pricing it would still be cheaper on Vodafone. It is all in the subsidy and total cost of ownership.

STEP ONE: Go buy a 2degrees sim card, I know for a fact that they only have hardware in the three main centres but I also know for a FACT that they have roaming on Vodafone 3G - you will have 3G on 2degrees today if you pop a sim card in.

How do I know? Well I drove from Wellington To Mt Ruapehu last weekend and I had constant 3G network. Whilst I was having my Mocca at the caffe I was able to check my emails at full 3.5G speeds. Now if they have recently built their network to cover the lower north island I will be shocked because this has not been documented anywhere.

Wait till Friday, the $6 pack will NOT be the only deal.
