Indeed, predictable.

Orcon's pricing looks fine, it may sharpen up a bit when every ISP is offering plans but it's still going to be constrained largely by the price ISP's pay for wholesale access to the local fibre companies.

All the boo hoo about not being in UFB coverage or RBI coverage should really go to it's own thread.

What will be really interesting is to see if it impacts dsl pricing like it did in .au.

That would be lovely if I lived in feilding, but I don't. I live half way between feilding and halcombe on leithbridge road.

ADSL2+ looks like it goes halfway up Lethbridge Road, Maewa, Manawatu District. Did you try entering Lethbridge Road and not Leithbridge road?

Getting a litte OT here but I was on the iPhone when I wrote that and it auto-corrected me 3 times and I got sick of trying to correct it back again. ADSL2+ comes from Feilding to about 50m from me. ADSL2+ also comes from Halcombe to my house. The ADSL2+ is slower than the ADSL1. The speed is 1.5Mbps. Maybe I should call it Ultra Slow Broadband? The Chorus website is really quite outdated as it says that the exchange does not offer ADSL2+ when it clearly does. Also, the Chorus guy must have visited as the ticket got closed and I noticed the ETP on the house had been moved.

I'm within the Chorus rollout area (Eastbourne) but not in year 1 or 2 - what is the likely timeframe for suburban completion of the project?

Last big rollout near this area was by Saturn, who ran HUGE cables on existing poles; as a result, residents and the council refused to grant a resource consent for that rollout to continue to round here, so we never got cable service. Still enjoyed Telecom's differential pricing, though :-)

Is the latest fibre system either more visually lightweight and acceptable for overhead or will it all be undergrounded in suburban areas? Because if it isn't, I suspect it may be some time before we see fibre round here.

It's all underground AFAIK. There was a video published by Chorus last year showing the "micro-trenching" system in use. It's clever stuff, and after the cable has been laid, the road surface or berm is restored pretty much as it was.

xpd: There are two options available for residential customers (incl. GST):

Fast: 30Mbps down / 10Mbps up
$75 – 30Gb cap
$89 – 60Gb cap
$99 – 100Gb cap
$199 – 1,000Gb cap

Super-Fast: 100Mbps down / 30Mbps up
$110 – 30Gb cap
$124 – 60Gb cap
$134 – 100Gb cap
$234 – 1,000Gb cap

Come on folks... It's GB (gigabyte), not Gb (gigabit).

There's a 8x difference there ;)

1.5Mb/s? Hate to say it, but that's above the target minimum for RBI covered areas anyway (1-5Mb/s). You're already covered to the extent the government is willing to cover you, anything better is on you to pay for. You can argue that you feel you aren't getting a decent deal out of your cut of the $1.5bn but that's a separate topic. (On a related note though, you do have master DSL filters installed in your house right? My connection jumped from 5Mb/s to 10Mb/s just by getting Chorus to install one - it'll cost you $120 or so but it's worth it).

Related to the thread though, I'm liking some of these prices - though I note that static IPs have dropped off the feature list? Orcon isn't (ugh) NATting connections right? Unlimited international landline calling for $13 is pretty darn good too. A bit yuck that all the plans have minimum terms though - 18 months for residential. And an ETF of "the entirety of the amount we would have charged you if you'd stayed" is plain ridiculous. Wasn't it Orcon that once said "we want customers, not prisoners"?

Re: my connection, nothing actually changed in regards to my connection because of the UFB/RBI. What did I actually pay for? It wasn't as though I had no service before and then did get service.

Re: static IPs, they are free on the business plans and unremovable (e.g. you have to use them).

Re: contracts, I would say that it is like cellphone networks. We sign you up for 18 months and you get a half price connection or something similar. Because there is no non-contract option we can only assume that the install without it must have been too high.

Theyll likely use a different device, they are using the term genius as a brand, rather than a specific device

On the page with the plans the picture looks exactly like the current "Genius" router
