fobski: but its steam...

and how do you know you are downloading from games.orcon.net.nz

you don't

therefore

assume unzerorated

IMO

if the banner said that the download was hosted by games.orcon.net.nz then I think it reasonable to assume that the download is hosted by games.orcon.net.nz

Satire:

I'm glad I already answered this earlier and don't need to reply to this post at all !

It's almost as if my name if John Titor !

Sigh.  Look at it again.  The D in Downloads is capitalised, indicating the initiation of a sentence.  In English, sentences denote independent statements.  So, in actuality, it says...

"Content hosting provided by games.orcon.net.nz.  Downloads zero-rated for Orcon customers."

Because they are two sentences, they can be read in isolation.  Witness:

"Content hosting provided by games.orcon.net.nz".  Still makes sense.
"Downloads zero-rated for Orcon customers".  Still makes sense.  However the previous sentence gives us context: "Content hosting provided by games.orcon.net.nz".  The context is, that the content hosting is provided by ... and so on.  Therefore, the statement reads that "content hosting is provided by this entity, and the content is zero-rated to customers of that entity".

Using a comma would be a little closer to the intent, but would still be somewhat confusing.  Hence the solution detonate settled on to simply remove mention of zero-rating, which is the most iron-clad.   That way, zero-rated traffic is just a cool bonus and not something you're, you know, relying on so that you don't go 20GB over your cap at $2/GB.

Now this is crazy
And I just met you
But if I see a banner that says the content was hosted by orcon and free to orcon customers
then woulnd;t it be reasonable to expect that to be true maybe

I know the song, but is this a new meme I wasn't aware of?

Oh, so I was right and you DID expect all internet tubes to be free for Orcon customers ?

Either way, I'm right and you're wrong.

Kyanar: What.? The.? You know what, screw it.? You ARE being deliberately obtuse.

And for some reason, you never seem to be able to provide the complete section that you are trying to quote, drop bits willy nilly and then try to say that you are correct because OMG ! LOOK WHAT IT SAYS ! when the original is no longer being quoted but your own modification of it made to suit yourself.

But hey, you know - each to their own, it's not really that unexpected.

What in blazes are you even talking about?  The banner said EXACTLY WHAT I QUOTED.  There's even a bloody picture of it in this thread!  TWICE!  The original press release was quoted on the Steam forums by another person and initially didn't link to any FAQ (logical, since I don't recall that FAQ existing at the initial launch).  Noone is modifying anything, bah, naff it.

If you can't figure it out then I'm not too sure explaining it to you in really small words will help. To me its quite obvious.

detonate: Banner has been updated to remove hopefully what is the last point of confusion from it all.

But realistically I'm probably just going to turn it off.

Let this be public record, stored in the Waywayback Machine, that I'm turning it off because of Kyanar.
This is why we can't have nice things.

Just before I stop replying to this thread, I'd like to say that the Orcon Games Zone, including the Steam Content Server was completely driven by techies at Orcon, and NOT by the marketing team.
It was supposed to benefit not just our customers, but all gamers in NZ.

Gee Gee.

So, you work for Orcon and that's an acknowledgment of Orcon being wrong, so will we see refunds coming now, due to the misleading advertising that has generated extra income for Orcon from this unmetered metered data?
It's been a clear breach of advertising standards.

Will there also be ads/news letter stating this change, as posting in some thread on some forum is much finer print of a contract change that a note in the T&C or mentioned in an FAQ.

Just because you dropped the ball, does mean you should run off with the ball say, I'm not playing anymore.

It's simple case of a breach of Advertising standards and need to be acknowledged (which it has been), fixed (it seems to be almost) and the change communicated to all Orcon customers (not updated in the fine print).

Nebbie: Well good to see that the banner that seems to concern some that is miss leading has now been removed however, guys we are all grown-ups here well I would hope so its really sad that its come down to this.

This. Now stop the bickering. I won't lock the thread but banhammers will be thrown if it continues - for any side.

Any ISP reading this discussion won't go past page two, in which case chances of getting a comment tend to zero.

Stop feeding the trolls.

FWIW I'm with the OP, if the thing on the screen says "Hosted by Orcon" and implies that "If it's hosted by Orcon, then it's free" - then anything the (crappy) Steam software does behind the scenes is irrelevant. Orcon need to either;

a) Remove the banner entirely
or
b) Make sure that 100% of Steam content is zero rated to their users somehow
or
c) Put in an obvious disclaimer

As it stands/stood it is/was misleading. It may have been unintentionally so, but the fact stands. Whether the actual functionality is thought to be common sense to the end user or otherwise is irrelevant.

I am also with the OP on this how hard is it for orcon to filter the IP's of the steam servers so that anything comming from those IP's is zero rated

and don't try telling me it can not be done if an ISP can filter bittorrent trafic it sure as hell can filter steam traffic

That's not even close to what the OP or anyone else who has posted in this thread or any of the customers who have been caught out by this problem, have been or ever were discussing.

I get free drink refills at Burger King so I'm going to complain and demand that BK ensures I get free refills at McDonalds.

curious to see what Orcon will do once you start talking to Target on TV3 and preferably after Orcon sends your bill to BayCorp.

Just a guess, but I'd pick one of these:
Laugh
Show that they have been handing out credits
Explain how to read an FAQ

quentinreade: Let me try and clarify things and put this in context.
Since we announced our Steam server we have faced complaints from people who expected all Steam content to be zero-rated.
We have credited people back who got bill shock (message me if you need a hand here too).
We have been trying to educate people re: how Steam content is served, and made changes to our FAQs and the like, but haven't been able to educate all.
The reason Det is defensive is we were trying to do something to benefit the NZ gaming community, at our cost.
Since then we have been dealing with the fallout - including a Commerce Commission investigation into both our and TCL's Steam offering.

Sounds like they have been really trying to make this work but due to the nature of Steam and people's inflammatory reactions to bill shock that it's not really worth it.
