haha fair enough!! That was just based on the earlier comment of mine where I had speeds of 2.5MB/s down on ADSL+2, then moved 1KM away and got a max speed of 1.2MB/s down on ADSL+2

if you're on the same exchange after the move, then that makes perfect sense. Moving further away = increased line attenuation = speed decrease

Update:

I have requested the plan change to VDSL Uncapped!! (Only took about 2 or 3 months). The technician is supposedly coming out tomorrow (22 July 2014) and I say supposedly as I haven't had any confirmation of this other than Orcon saying that my plan changes will take effect from the 23rd July 2014.

Will report back here as things happen.

PM me your account number please, moving to VDSL isn't a simple plan change as you are changing technology and you should have had a confirmation of a tech booking...I'll check what is going/gone on.

Thank you for the offer, but no need to do that now. The booking was set for the 23rd of July and the tech guy come on the requested date (there was just no confirmation of this as stated there would be).

Nonetheless we are now on the VDSL and time for my second update. So far the upload speed is the highest we can achieve on our line (10.2mb/s) and I havent had any problems with that. The download speed was quoted at 26.5mb/s by the chorus technician. He said that that should increase to ~29mb/s after the training period. Unfortunately the stability of the download speed is worse than what we originally had, where it goes anything from 4mb/s to 25mb/s...

I will wait until the line training period is over before reporting back to Orcon just to make sure all variables are removed. The source that am downloading from is reliable and it maxed out my previous lines bandwidth (10mb/s).

Alright, I will PM you them after I post this message. And yeah I guess that makes sense. After all Chorus wouldn't know what protocols you (Orcon) or any other ISP for that matter, may have in place for specific plans regarding their speeds.

I havent specifically tried the Orcon speed test, however, the Ookla Speedtest that I ran a few days ago gave a very steady/constant download and upload speed as well as a ridiculously low ping... our original was 26ms. I will only be able to try the orcon speed test much later this evening when everyone is off the network and there isnt as much load on it.

I'm confused, if there is enough load on your network to make speed tests vary from your machine then your throughput will also be by definition varying as you quoted above.

If you mean on our network, then the Orcon speedtest should give you the best result and at least as fast and stable as Ookla Auckland, if it isn't then I'd want to investigate...

Agreed, but the speedtest that I linked was done when there was no one else at home. Therefore it should have given the best results capable?? I was just mentioning what I said incase you wanted me to run the Orcon speed test now...

Despite the stable speed test, when I actually download something, thats when the speeds vary, and when I was doing this, I was the only computer connected to my modem. Probably forgot to mention all of that in my original post. Sorry about that...

I would still like you to investigate (if you dont mind and still see the need for it) as its (VDSL) definitely not as stable as what we had when on the ADSL... even with the same about of people using the wifi.

At the moment you are doing 20-30GB/day UPLOAD. Because of the way tcp works this will be causing download speed variations, its inherent in the way the data gets moved on the line.

If you truly isolate all other devices (inc wireless), and check the remaining machine isn't torrent seeding, cloud syncing or similar then I'd expect you to get a good, fast and stable speed.

Do that and let me know if you still have a problem.

Ah ok I see... though because I had limited the upload to around ~150KB/s at the time I was downloading, I thought the download speed would have at least been faster than what we were originally getting... as only 150KB/s was being used, which should have left heaps of bandwidth left for the download part? (I would understand the download speed would be slowed drastically if I was uploading at the maximum 1.1MB/s due to modem/tcp restrictions and all the other factors)

I'd expect you to get a good, fast and stable speed.

Do that and let me know if you still have a problem.

Alright I will see if I can do this later tonight and will line something up to download and then report back here.

Edit 2: This was done after pausing all downloading/uploading and the only other factor atm is my brother who is doing some light browsing.

New Update: Download Test

So I removed all computers off the wifi (except the one that I am on and using for the downloading). I used Speed Meter that comes with NetWorx usage monitoring software to record the speed throughout the download. The download took 4minutes and 35 seconds, and was a 400MB file.

Note that Current transfer rate, the lowest it dropped to was 250KB/s... and it stays there for quite a while and then will increases. Also note the Average Transfer Rate, compared to the Maximum Transfer Rate.
Also this was the download source that would max out my allowed download speed when I was on ADSL. I.e. It would transfer at 1.1MB/s for the entire duration of the download.

I also ran another Orcon Speed test:
The download and upload speed were as constant as can be.

you say you removed all the computers off wifi, except your one, are you doing the above tests over wifi?

if so that explains your results, test over ethernet. never try to test your connection over wifi, its unreliable and you will hardly ever see line speed unless you have the latest and greatest wifi modem

also post up your current modem stats.

Just to add to this excellent point is that there could be other networks interfering with your WiFi, or other radio sources generally so yes, please test only over ethernet, WiFi performance <will> be slower and much more variable. If you have several devices connected they will compete for WiFi bandwidth before they get a chance to compete for line bandwidth.
