And I'm down again. Had to move the modem to tidy up all the cables from the install. Now I can't reconnect to the internet. ONT seems OK (i.e. Optical is green) but can't get the modem to connect. Have restored to factory, sequence restarted, etc but no joy.

It's one thing after the other, I'm really over it now. Over the last three years I've had annual outages on copper, 2-3 weeks in length. I hoped fibre would be more reliable, it seems not if a simple power off/on crashes it. The CSR couldn't help, so now I'm twiddling my thumbs again for God knows how long this time. If I don't get a week of stability from the time it's fixed, I'm changing provider. Loyalty only goes so far :(

Finally back online. Turns out the original fibre install a few weeks ago was not done properly, so there was a lot of noise on the connection - +30db or thereabouts. Tech today suggested the last guy was in a hurry or didn't quite know what he was doing, and the splicing was all wrong. Made me wonder why there was splicing for a completely new connection on new infrastructure, but I don't know enough about fibre to say if that's an issue or not. Either way, the initial job was botched and after the work today there was about +10db detected on the line and I'm all good again. Speeds are very good up around 860/450.

So Orcon worth going to from 2D now? Really tempted with this free Xbox One S they're offering. Been meaning to buy one, but this kills two birds with one stone.

Depends how smooth your install/upgrade/transition is and how much patience you have. I had no end of issues for 2 weeks but it's been solid since those were resolved. Xbox arrived and was left on my front step - we didn't sign for it and when I spoke to Orcon they showed me the tracking which had a signature. We can only assume the courier signed on our behalf, what a helpful chap! The Xbox is great, the internet is great, but as is always the case Orcon themselves are not great to deal with at all.

Hope you made a very swift complaint about that to the courier company as that's illegal and a fire-able offense under the courier companies rules... I had a courier driver fired for it after they did it a second time for leaving hundreds of dollars worth of text books on the door step even though they were meant to be signed for (which she did herself) instead of leaving a card to collect in the letter box as she should have done

For me, Orcons performance is fantastic.

It's if you have a provisioning, billing or any other issue requiring you to phone their service desk will leave you wanting to stick pins in your eyes.

I haven't had a single outage (North Shore, Auckland) in the last 5-6 years being with them.

On a side note, anyone else using orcon webmail that has recently moved to gig started receiving a massive amount of spam?

The day I moved I started getting dozens of spam emails a day, I've tuned the mailguard settings from 7, 5, 3 and now 1 but i'm still getting at least 10+ spam emails a day.

Its rather annoying!

I have on several occasions and it less painful than communicating and making sense with their helpdesk.

I personally feel their "help"desk has degraded their reputation with customers - well it has with me and a few people I know who have left them.

Our gigabit service was connected today, so i thought i'd post the speedtest result.

Very impressive performance, with consistent upload overspeed.

Overall the transfer process was quick and easy to deal with (except for a holdup with migrating our phone number from our old ISP, which is still being dealt with.)

Location: Christchurch, Enable coverage area.

Hardware: Orcon supplied Fritzbox 7490, Cat6 connection to X99 Desktop.

That's how it's done... they fiber they blow through the toughened direct bury sheath (the black cable from the street to your house) is spliced at both ends (to the internal tail at the house end, and to the fiber in the street at the other). Much more reliable in outdoor conditions than connectors.

Anyone happen to know if your bound to your contract if within the first 3 weeks your phone has stopped working over and over and over again?

Really really regret switching plans now, the internet works but they don't seem to have any clue what they are doing with the phone. Previous fibre plan had a phone that worked flawlessly.

Finally received the courier bag to send back my previous plans modem and feel like sending the new modem and the xbox one s back tbh! :P
