Given uncertain and conflicting information, I've decided the optimal strategy is:

1. Wait until 2degrees turn off the 2G network. The mobiles may or may not still work. Cost: $0 if the mobiles work.

2. If the mobiles don't work, then switch to Vodafone. Cost: $8 (4 SIMs).

3. If mobiles still don't work on Vodafone, then buy new mobiles. Cost: about $1000 for equivalent mobiles.

@Ouranos They will 100% work on Vodafone the same as they work on 2D

When I moved a couple of GPS trackers off 2degrees to VF when they first announced this, there was a deal if you ported the number to get some credit. Might still be a thing. I wasnt going to bother since the phone number is just for them to bill me but for free money I did the port since why not...

We plan to ensure all of these are LTE operational over the month or two post GSM closure and will continue our roll-out of LTE 900MHz to the majority of our network over the next few years.

I see in rural parts of West Auckland there is already band 8 LTE (900MHz).

Received an email yesterday saying that March 15th was D-day.

@tripper1000 Could be a recently built site (last 12 months) so they would not have added 2G 900 but 4G 900

Any word on rolling out 700MHz to the Hutt Valley? Maybe VoLTE in the future? There seems to be a phobia/paranoia by carriers about using 700MHz.

Think they're starting already. Picking up the dual SIM phone and have seen emergency calls only on the second sim many times today. Gets the 2g back once picked up and not on the table but never seen it before when at home.

It can't come soon enough, As I can't get 4G at the gym. (converted warehouse building that is partly underground with concrete walls and metal roof). And 3G often has terrible latency there and drops out alot. Which I presume is due to lots of phones in the same space, all trying to connect to the same tower at the same time. And due to the partly circuit switched nature of 3G, meaning all of the available circuits often being in use.

Only need the data for streaming and other low use purposes. As my understanding is that 4G copes far better with large numbers of devices sharing the same spectrum. So streaming will work far better there.

Looks like they have started the switch off a week early. We have some straggler devices on 2D 2G and most off them went offline this morning.
