It's good to hear that you got it working in the end :)

My house is also supplied from a pole. Does anyone know whether it's possible to get a "pre-check" done and get these sorts of problems sorted out in advance? Fibre is supposed to be available in my street in October and as you can imagine I'd like to get it set up with a minimum of fuss.

I do love that that is the case. When you move into a new place that is able to get fiber your options are:

Have no internet for the next few months while it gets installed.
Pay $200 install fee for ADSL for only a few months of service.

Pretty much, though Snap have been fairly flexible for some people, doing ADSL temporarily until fibre is available.

I've turned off my TC cable connection, which has been 99.99% reliable for the past 6 years. They did me well, and I'd have happily stayed with them but they were slow off the mark with UFB offerings. So far I'm happy enough with Snap services, and the actual technical service seems good.

I'm on TC/Vodafone cable, which is excellent apart from the low maximum data allowance.
The problem with upgrading from a cable connection is that fiber is rarely available in "cable" areas.
Presumably Chorus feels that people in cable areas already have UFB - so why compete with cable?
And Vodafone doesn't want to compete with itself.
