Rambaldi:

Anyone happen to know if your bound to your contract if within the first 3 weeks your phone has stopped working over and over and over again?

Really really regret switching plans now, the internet works but they don't seem to have any clue what they are doing with the phone. Previous fibre plan had a phone that worked flawlessly.

Finally received the courier bag to send back my previous plans modem and feel like sending the new modem and the xbox one s back tbh! :P

Still having problems with the phone?  If so please flick me a PM with your account number - and I will look into it.  Thank you.

SOme areas we haven't chosen to offer 1Gig as it requires some infrastructure and backhaul upgrades to ensure that we give the best service possible to customers.

What area are you in?

You guys aren't going to get anywhere with that sort of sensible, fact based and responsible attitude!

(Orcon isn't the only ISP with this sort of policy)

Cheers - N

Getting atrociously slow speeds in Khandallah, Wellington tonight, Down to 50/20 when testing against the Auckland and Wellington speedtest.net servers.

Hoping this isn't Infrastructure related following the quakes? Say it ain't so Orcon?? I haven't seen things drop below a minimum of 400/200 on those Spark servers since the gigabit was connected last month.

Edit: ignore me, problem solved/found. I was transcoding h.265 via Plex from my server in Wellington while I'm at my brothers house in Auckland. The transcoding seemed to throttle my internet for some reason. I suspect my server isn't grunty enough for transcoding while direct playing on a few other streams concurrently. Generally it all works fine when it's h.264. Oh well, live and learn!

How long should the sign up process take?

I filled the online stuff nearly 3 weeks ago.

My current fibre ISP wasn't on the list. I've spoken to CS twice to confirm details. The latest convo was last Monday, bit have heard nothing since.

Hey team,

A potential customer here looking to switch over to you guys from MyRepublic. I am looking to go onto the Gigabit plan in Dunedin and wanted to know a few things:

  1. Do you use CGNAT?
  2. Do you allow port forwarding without having a static IP address?
  3. What are the typical speeds for a user on gigatown?
  4. Do you throttle/shape traffic or have any peak time slow downs?
  5. Do you have open contracts as we are students renting?
  6. Do you allow users to join without needing to get a router?
  7. Are static IP's a one off charge or monthly?

Thanks!

MrIrish:

Hey team,

A potential customer here looking to switch over to you guys from MyRepublic. I am looking to go onto the Gigabit plan in Dunedin and wanted to know a few things

I'll have a crack...

1. Do you use CGNAT?

No, your router will get a real, Internet addressable IPv4 address.

2. Do you allow port forwarding without having a static IP address?

Yes.  (Which probably relates to Question 1)

3. What are the typical speeds for a user on gigatown?

Depending on a number of factors, up to about 900Mbit/s.

Routing speed, protocol overheads, and the physical limitations of gigabit ethernet all play a role here, along with the unknown quantity of "the Internet" - which is why it's not quite a thousand.

4. Do you throttle/shape traffic or have any peak time slow downs?

We don't throttle or shape traffic, and we build and manage the network with the goal of avoiding peak time congestion.  I can't say it won't or doesn't ever happen, but we do our best to avoid it.  There are also parts of the network outside our control, obviously I can't speak for those, but as far as I know peak-time congestion hasn't been much of a problem for UFB as yet.

5. Do you have open contracts as we are students renting?

No.

6. Do you allow users to join without needing to get a router?

We always provide a router, however you are free to BYO.  Worth noting our HelpDesk doesn't provide assistance with BYO routers, however Geekzone is full of folk who can help!  Just make sure your chosen router supports DHCP on VLAN 10.

7. Are static IP's a one off charge or monthly?

Monthly charge.  But as per 2. you probably don't need one.  The dynamic IPs tend to be "sticky" so they seldom change anyway (Personally I use a dynamic DNS service "just in case")

Hope that helps!
