How this relates to real world speeds is unknown but would expect at least half that. So either 2degrees haven't enabled HSPA+ yet as they appear to be in a testing phase, or whats probably more likely is that 2degrees just don't have the transmission capacity to their sites, as most of the sites I've driven past are using Microwave Links, similar to vodafone, where as telecom have fibre and unlimted capacity, microwvae links are very limited and could be somewhere between 34Mbit/s (16x2E1 PDH) or 155Mbit/s (STM-1 SDH).

I recall reading somewhere that the majority of their sites in CHC are connected via fiber due to a deal 2degrees made with a local fiber company.

In AKL it seems to be a mixture -- I know of several sites which don't have microwave links so must be fed by fiber. One site for example is co-located with Telecom so 2degrees might be sharing their fiber link.

Not sure of WLG but I guess slightly more fiber due to the geography not being suited to microwave links.

There is a lot with Microwave. I think its about 50/50. In the Hutt where its flatter most seem to be on microwave but around the CBD/western areas there is a lot more without microwave. Although I know of 3 in my area with microwave compared to the others with fibre...

3G working in Whenuapai at times.  Noticed problems a few days back when travelling round Auckland.  Android phone picks up 3G then when it looses it it takes ages if at all to drop back to GPRS.  Have set the phone to GPRS only at the moment to get reliable reception.

Anyone know if testing includes handing over the Vodafone 3G when you loose 2degrees or does that not happen yet?

Cheers
Andy

I've had a few times where the phone would also try and attempt to roam on Vodafone 3G too - and obviously fail as it's locked out at the moment. It annoys me as it takes a while for the phone to kick back on to 2degrees' 3G, which means the session just hangs there while it does its thing.

What I'm wondering is - is there an agreement for roaming on Vodafone's 3G network even in urban areas?

Also, 2degrees have removed "HSPA+" from their coverage page (where the statement on the Wikipedia page came from) a while back, so they must have scaled it down for launch and upgrade it accordingly afterwards. I would expect 7.2mbps HSDPA for most places when it goes live.

I have a meeting with 2degrees tomorrow (22nd July). I have no idea what is the topic, and no idea if what they tell me will be public or not. But if anyone wants questions asked...

  • Will they look at a push towards smartphones? (e.g. selling them, providing appropriately sized data packs, data in postpaid plans etc.)

  • Speaking of postpaid, are they still focusing on being lower priced or will the focus of the plans be different compared to their prepaid offering?

I bet $50 they are giving you a plan or something so you can try out their 3G network and that they will have full 3G service in 2-4 weeks.

Good bet... But I have a 2degrees SIM, and and as you know I saw it working around town (WLG CBD, Jville, Tawa and Porirua). But any other information will be good.

Meeting in the afternoon, will update later.

What he said.

I recall Bryony Hilless said that they would be giving Mauricio the opportunity to try out the network prior to launch.  So I would expect a sim card on the same basis staff have been operating on for the last few months.  And if this is correct then I would anticipate 3G for the public at large is being timed for the 1 year anniversary.

If you do get a sim card Mauricio, I would appreciate a suite of testing of speeds - nothing too scientific, perhaps just at different times of day, under different signal conditions etc.

Never heard PB was selling 2degrees equipment... but it's new alright (within the past 10 days)

10GB of included data! If that's true, that's way beyond any other provider on the market! Surprised (I better hope it's not going to cost the earth...)

There's also a 512MB plan too.

lets hope its not a misprint and was meant to say 1GB.

im thinking its likely these broadband plans will only work in the broadband zone (auck, well, chc) but basic  data packs eg. 6$ 50mb will work nationwide.

I don't see how they could easily enforce a restriction like that. Most likely they'll just absorb the cost of traffic on VF's network for the time being. I suspect they'll soon start their phase 2 rollout (Hamilton, Palmy, Tauranga, et al) too now that they've nearly completed their 3G rollout for their phase 1 sites.
