They will probably change their mind after a few hundred painful installs when they realise external ONTs are much easier to bolt on the side and walk away. Verizon etal seem to agree.

sbiddle: I'm a great support of the ONT being external, but many others don't share this view.

I can see arguments for both ways, perhaps it could be offered as a standard choice. Could be a lot easier in old houses.

My own situation is exposed waterfront so an external unit might not be too reliable; in fact, even an internal unit in the garage might deteriorate quickly.

Wouldn't it be more painful extending ethernet and power to the side of the house rather than just extending an optical cable to wherever the customer wants their 'modem' (ONT)?

And power. The ONT is an active device.

The biggest issue for UFB isn't ONT placement, once in the home its fairly easy!. Its shared driveways, long driveways with no fly access and multi-dwelling units which are going to cause the biggest headaches.

Chorus are only paid by CFH to go past the end user homes. They have no incentive to make it cheaper etc to enter the houses. The other LFCs (Enable, UFF etc) are paid to enter the home. (multi-dwellings excluded I think?)

One guy commented on here that if it was going to cost $100 to get installed then hes not interested. Majority of NZ are probably going to feel the same way. Its going to be interesting to see how this all works out.

So if your house is within 5mtrs of the road would it not be possible for them to give you some slack on how much they run through the house considering it says upto 100mtrs

take my place for instance
Roadside to house = 5Mtrs:: outside wall to PH jackpoint 9Mtrs (well within the allowable 100Mtrs)

From what I have read (On the previous page) I understand it to mean the following.

If you have a trench/conduit that they deem usable that is preexisting or you have organized yourself they will install for free provided it is less than 100M.

OR

They will dig it themselves and install it themselves provided that the distance is under 15M if there is no preexisting Trench or Conduit.

OR

In specific areas where the cable is done overhead they will run the cable to your house (Assuming this has either 15m or 100m limitations applied to it)

A standard Installation includes up-to 5m of fibre inside the house.
