An update for you all:

We have made some changes that should improve the performance of latency sensitive traffic, particularly to Australia. This is obviously good news for gamers playing on Australian servers.

We are also investigating other speed issues, particularly to LA, as that seems to be the one causing the most complaints at present.

Thanks for the update duncan. We appreciate it.

I know we are a hard crowd to please, and you do a pretty damn good job. :p

Hi Duncan it wasn't the ping time that was my concern 80ms last night now down 6ms to 74 isn't a big difference but the up/down speed from last night was absolutely ridiculous as you'll see on page 8

as for LA and DC

well that just says it all theres still a major problem somewhere

Hi Duncan,

Im still getting a slow download on my ADSL2+ connection and have already logged a ticket with Orcon regarding this so will be following up as required.

I understand that Orcon are currently investigating this, so I will keep off your back for now.

My results below:

Thanks Duncan.I really appreciate it when you look into maximising things like stability and latency for gaming and streaming. For me personally this is a great differentiator between ISPs. A finely tweaked service in these areas is a unique selling point that differentiates one ISP from what appears to me to be many similar providers pumping the same data across the same lines and out through the same international links. Maybe others feel this is important to them too, I dunno.
Keep pushing the boundaries :)<I don't know how services like lowerping, com and others do what they do, but if you can build this into your product offering it is says something special about Orcon>

Just realised I too am experiencing slow speeds to LA and San Francisco, both servers are between 300 and 400kbps on Speedtest. Speeds to Australia and Asia are fine, but Europe and the UK are also about the same as the US.

Log a fault ticket with Orcon for it.  The more information they have, the better they will be able to troubleshoot it.

Yep, fully agree so I did that before I even posted on here.

I'm sending tracerts to YouTube and Flickr every evening.

Lest they forget!

If they can't even support YouTube on ADSL2+ then, umm...

Tonights Speedtest to LA turns the world upside down:

Ping 165: Wow, thats pretty good actually
DL 299: Oh dear.
UL 560: Umm, isnt download supposed to be faster than upload. Methinks they have got the cables on their ADSL machines round the wrong way...

Same for me, but this has only just started happening in the last couple days.

I don't believe it was particularly to LA...those were just the examples people were giving of the slow speeds internationally (aside from Australia).

I'd agree with Silverwolf, Duncan it's not just speeds to LA it's to anywhere outside of New Zealand at the moment international speeds are so poor I'm starting to wonder why i gave up dial up (well maybe not quite that bad) but you get the drift we're all paying you guys top dollar for a service that just isn't happening and i think we're all entitled to some sort of refund for just having to put up with the constant slowness !!..

from Auckland to Napier

from Auckland to Wellington

gee i thought living closer to Auckland would give me a better ping but apparently not that extra 200Km's = half the ping time

to Sydney pings are good but speeds are rubish

to LA still garbage

to London
um sorry it was so slow that speedtest.net wouldn't run a test from there until i closed and reopend the page

this all goes to show it's not just to LA it's everywhere
