old3eyes: I see this 2D USB data stick on the PB tech site. Is this new?? On back order

http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?item=MPP2DM1553

Never heard PB was selling 2degrees equipment... but it's new alright (within the past 10 days)

10GB of included data! If that's true, that's way beyond any other provider on the market! Surprised (I better hope it's not going to cost the earth...)

There's also a 512MB plan too.

lets hope its not a misprint and was meant to say 1GB.

im thinking its likely these broadband plans will only work in the broadband zone (auck, well, chc) but basic  data packs eg. 6$ 50mb will work nationwide.

While I tend to agree with you, since it just doesn't seem logical or in line, I have two reasons why 10GB might be a real thing:

  • 2degrees have their current data pack as a... pack. You can buy as many packs as you want in a month. So someone can just buy two 512MB data packs to make 1GB, so there's no real reason to make a 1GB pack

  • "10GB" appears 3 times, and I highly doubt that the person was stupid or lazy enough to type that all out (and if it is wrong then either it's a decoy or he got some seriously screwed up info)

As for zoning, like KiwiSurfer, I doubt that will happen since that will just be a pain to enforce and educate.

well im sure you have read the thread regrading the "broadband zone" text using data outside 2degrees network......

after seeing that i dont find it hard to believe....

Also knowing that none of the vodafones resellers (orcon, slingshot etc) move on data pricing, i think  its going to be very hard for 2degrees to offer crazy prices while roaming on vodafone 3G.

but this is coming from a person who didn't think they would be offering 22c calling and 2c text ;)

Link to said thread?

I think data is special since people will often have long data sessions -- possibly surviving multiple change of networks. So it would not be practical to charge a mixed rate for sessions involving both VF and 2D networks. Easier to just cut the losses and charge the same for sessions on either network.

Zoning might work out after all...

The thing is, say there's an urban pack as well as a national pack. What happens with those at the fringes of what's considered "urban"? I once roamed on Vodafone in Mellons Bay which is in East Auckland. If that used a national bundle or charged at national rates then that wouldn't be fair and would be confusing. No network is perfect and so these things may happen.

A 10GB data pack moves this product into the home broadband market rather than mobile data, I'd be surprised if even an IPAD would suck down that much data.(wonder if thats why Vodaofne and telecom aren't saying much about the IPAD and 2Degrees will launch 3G the same day as IPAD) If they price it right, your going to see a massive shift to 2D.

With the recent 3G activity and this latest info, you get the feeling something interesting is certainly close.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

True story - I am 2 degrees from Rhys Darby.

I was at the New World in Orewa a couple of weeks after launch, and bought a topup voucher for my wife. The check-out guy said "2degrees eh?" The guy packing bags says "Dude, don't do your uncle story again."

I said "Your uncle story?" Check out guy says "Yeah, my unclde's a bit involved with 2degrees." "Oh yeah," I say, "I work for 2degrees. Who's your uncle?"

"Rhys Darby."

Was the check-out guy wearing a brown cardigan like his uncle though?

So you're going to tell me to watch the Facebook page today right?  For the sneak-peek at the 3G ad ...

freitasm: I have a meeting with 2degrees tomorrow (22nd July). I have no idea what is the topic, and no idea if what they tell me will be public or not. But if anyone wants questions asked...

What time are you meeting them?
