http://www.orcon.net.nz/about/article/orcon_adds_zero-rated_steam_servers_and_other_gaming_goodness

Big news for gamers: Orcon has installed new gaming servers, a Steam server, and has zero-rated traffic to both.

There are programs out there which try to force steam to use the server you choose, but basically if your local server dosent have the game, it will automatically seek out one that does.

Orcon have suggested that best way to check, is to start downloading the game, and if the Orcon banner appears, then its coming form their server, if not, then they dont have the content or its overloaded. According to their forums, theyve got about 6TB of stuff on board/on its way, so covers quite a bit :)

Apparently they've got 2Tb out of 6Tb, and once they have 6Tb that should be everything on steam. Can't wait :)

Learn about Steam? It's a retailer that sells PC games online, you make an account with them, and wherever you go as long there's internet you can login and download your games. It's pretty popular. Go look up their website, and I think there're couple of free games as soon as you create an account.. and say good bye to your cash...

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

If youre into gaming, then download the Steam client and sign up - at its core, its just a digital store for games - free games, full games, demos, trailers etc all available.

Good thing about it is that if there is a local mirror (Steam cache), you can usually download from that, speeding up your download time and sometimes as in Orcons case if youre an Orcon customer, avoid the data cost :)

I'm downloading Half Life 2 / TF2 at the moment and although I'm not seeing the Orcon banner, it doesn't seem to be using any of my data allowance (Data just reset and it's been on 0.00GB for the last 30 mins). Have I got the right server?

Cheers

It should show the Orcon banner from what Ive seen.... if youre not seeing the Orcon banner, then it maybe downloading form somewhere else, this happens if the server is full/down or the content isnt available yet.

Not sure how often the usage meter updates... might drop Orcon a line and find out.

Update : "Every 3-4hrs I believe" was the response I got

There's some more info on this in Orcon's game forum games.orcon.net.nz/?page=forums including reference to using Steam Watch to ensure you're only downloading un-metered Ozone content from Orcon ...

Click "Play" on the game you're downloading and a progress window should show up with a banner from the server you're using.

Glad to see this has gone live but Witcher 2 still hasn't been added by the looks of it :( I've been waiting to play it for a long time now but can't afford the data.

Thanks Detonate, it seems to be working now after having major problems this morning getting Steam to connect. After an XP system restore it seems to be connecting to the right server now and so far I have done about 10 gigs zero rated.

So yeah - seems kind of hit and miss. Maybe when I tried to connect last night the server was full but I'm not 100% on that.

After we've downloaded the game. How do we make sure that when playing the game it plays off the Orcon server and is unmetered ?
