Got an email from them last nite saying that they had abandon plans in my area in Auckland ( Pt Chev) to install LLU gear in the local cabinets and as a result my subsidized broadband would be going to normal rates on Dec 23 which I think will be about $75 for 30 gig. They did suggest going to Genius but my wife said "Over my dead body"

Regards,

genius is $75 for 30GB anyway, so you wouldn';t have saved anything by switchiung to that.

$75 for 30GB is still a bloody good price though

You could always go to Vodafone naked 60gb for $65 if you have an on account mobile with them too.  Really depends on if you need a landline I guess.

Orcon have never installed any equipment in cabinets anyway, only exchanges.

When the vast majority of customers are services from cabinets rather than exchanges the business case for ULL gear in exchanges can't really be that good.

Exatly there is no room for orcons MSAN's they are a lot bigger then telecoms ISAMs
Compas, Orcon, Ihug, Slingshot, TCL all have the same issue users behind a cabinet can NEVER get another broadband provider but Telecom or Telecom wholesaled broadband.

Well 1/3 of the cabinet is empty, surely there is nothing stopping them buying ISAM's from their DSLAM providers rather than MSAN's?

Isn't it simply that LLU gear in cabinets doesn't work economically, With upto 300 lines in each cabinet once you consider taking out the big two's market share (Telecom 50-60%, Telstraclear probably 30%) it's simply not worth another provider installing expensive gear for a possible 60 lines/customers.

Even more so with UFB going on as the time period for return on investment is very short.

Size is a moot point. Space was left for providers and much discussion occured over the size of the equipment in original MED and ComCom discussions. Even what ALU gear Telecom would use to ensure that there was enough space was discussed extensively.

The issue comes down entirely to $. Putting an ISAM/DSLAM into a cabinet to service somewhere in the real of 20-30 customers (for the average large ISP) and paying the regulated backhaul costs set by the ComCom would result in a loss per customer for the ISP if they were to charge the same retail prices as the regulated wholesale plans.

Holy hell.. just looked into that deal, i could not only save $50 on my phone bill but by switching to vodafone for sky i would also get a free upgrade to mysky.. Win/Win!

Edit: Of course on further inspection im not in the Red network so i lose out. Just like with orcon genius.. Seems you have to live in auckland to get decent broadband pricing.

Ah yes that was one of their bad decisions where they decided the backhaul cost should be split per number of providers not by per share of lines in the cabinet.

You can still get it if not in red network, for an extra $10

I suspected that.. but its no surprise at all!. Blenheim really is the backwaters of NZ, we are a fair bit behind, part of town doesn't even have ADSL2 yet! Hopefully one day we will have real choice. Its not like its a small town, we have a population of about 30,000.  Funnily enough the UFB programme for the south island started here a couple of weeks ago

Yeah UFB is hitting the towns like that first .. Which i guess is a good thing , TCL does have LLU gear there but doesn't service that area :(
