Should Hi-Def recordings stream over DLNA in the same was as SD ? If no,
is it a limitation of DLNA or a block of some kind by the broadcaster ?
Having setup DLNA with various Panasonic components there's a number of
inconsistencies but this is the worst, You can see the filenames but HD ones
won't play. (By LAN connection either to a H-Def TV, or a BluRay player connected to SD TV.)

HD is no probs over DLNA,

I stream HD mp4s to a Sony bravia no problem, it is likely to be a codec issue on your panasonic equipment, check what file formats they support. Each manufacturer is free to choose what codecs they support across DLNA, and some support more than others..

There is certainly no evil plot with the movie studios to prevent it happening

I notice you have posted this in the Freeview forum.
I assume this means you are trying to play Freeview transport streams?

As was asked above, what type of files are you trying to play?
What DLNA media server are you using?

I'm using Twonky 7.0 and the file format is whatever the Panasonic DMR-XW 380 records in.
It's hit and miss what will play over DLNA but you can see all the files. Ones that won't play just
return you to the menu with no message.

Also tried Serviio but that couldn't see the 380 at all.

Tried a letter to Panasonic about 3 months ago and got one email back that wasn't much help
and further inquiries got no reply.

Well, cutting to the chase here, and at the risk of igniting a firestorm of protest, I'll venture the opinion that DLNA basically sucks, and you should be looking for a different method.

(What do I do? I'm glad you asked! Currently I just store everything from my Vu+ in its native .TS format on a total of about 10 TB of disk drives attached to my iMac, with content served back to the Vu+ via SMB as necessary via a wired LAN. I'm looking to take the Mac out of the equation now, and I have got two Raspberry Pis on order. One I'm going to configure with XMBC, controlled from my android phone, and the other as a NAS handling the drives.)

Sounds good... Sure, DLNA may not be the ultimate but it's all I've got and some aspects of it work brilliantly. It's just anything recorded of Freeview may or may not play... such is life ! But if it could somehow be made to work....

Well, one option could be to transcode what you have recorded into a format that the DLNA renderer can interpret. That would need a bit of investigation to find out what that is, and some software to do it (which could be free) and a processor with enough grunt to do it in a reasonable time.

I've never had a single issue playing Panasonic files off a Panasonic recorder when I'm using a Panasonic device to view the files...
For instance, Panasonic full HD plasma or LED.
Bringing in devices from Sony or Samsung have been problematic though... but I find them problematic most of the time...

I had the same problem with Twonky. Can see all the files on my BW880 but can't play them.
On the other hand Windows Media Centre sees them and plays them all.

Dunners, that's interesting that all your Panasonic stuff works (including HiDef I guess?). All Panasonic here too, including 2 Blu Ray Players. One works, one doesn't.

Apparently Twonky 7 breaks things... whereas the 6th generation is somewhat more stable.
I'm yet to test the theory yet though, as I don't want to move away from version 6 just in case.
