Hawkes Bay and West Coast going tonight at 2am...

I assume its simple as someone at Kordia hitting some off switches? or would they do what Sky did and display a message for a few hours noting its shut down?

If you wait until tonight at 2am I guess you'll find out (assuming you are in one of the areas mentioned).

Kordia and JDA will take down the main sites at 2am. Some small sites ie translators will be switched off progressively in the next week but the main focus is to remove the signal to sites. Back ups and bypasses need to be disabled too. There has been work behind to scenes to identify dependency’s in both these areas. I think the main ¨concern¨ is not the actual switch off of transmitters, but the viewers loss of reception afterwards and how it might play out in the media.

How it should play out is:

You have had 2+ years to sort this out, you are a moron and don't deserve television.

Were they running any form of ticker on the screen of analog services up to the shutdown like they did in the US?

I tend to agree with your sentiment, but there are always elderly people who just don't understand this sort of thing. You would hope, though, that by and large they'll have relatives who will sort this stuff out for them. Then you get people who just have their head in the sand and are completely unaware that anything like this is happening. I have very little sympathy for them.

TVNZ has been running tickers on the central region on analogue about the ASO. Don't know about TV3, not sure if they even do regions.

Ajobbins was staying in a Motel in Wellington on Thursday night that still had analogue in the rooms in fat-o-vision. Wonder what people will be watching tomorrow?

Yeah, I'm in the lower NI, so will be experiencing this tomorrow. The Missus got a freeview box for her hold CRT TV. I have a hard drive recorder that won't be able to record anything without an additional box.

Were they actual analog or being fed from an array of cheap nasty DVB-S boxes using the rubbish internal modulators? most motels I have seen have just used the boxes on the same dish as sky.

That's right, I'm not sufficiently familiar with MATV to understand the logic behind doing so, but a lot of bigger installations re-modulate everything before feeding it on to the sets anyway, so the fact that you have analog in the room doesn't necessarily mean you're picking up an analog broadcast...

You can easily spot is this is the case or not by looking for dotcrawl - since a modulator will in 99% of cases simply have a composite input.

A few recordings...

Cell phone video of the TV, Prime ASO

As you can see from the end of the video, One, two, and prime went to static, three went black (went to snow shortly after), and Maori stayed alive (and is still running)

Video capture, TV2 ASO

VHF channels were a little fuzzy, I don't have a VHF antenna connected anymore!

There will now be thousands of additional VHF antennas up on roofs doing nothing useful.

I can't see them coming down in a hurry unless someone like a community group comes around offering to remove them. Scrap metal places would be loving it

Not really, few 100 grams of badly corroded aluminium with masses of dirt over it, and needing rusted metal fasteners removed from them.

Also they may still be used for FM, so dont go pulling them down in too much of a hurry.
