Hi,
        recently I installed a freeview dish for a friend, and she was going to dump what I suspect is a half decent "SKY" dish installation. It is basically a 60 cm dish with a Sharp Ku lnbf installed. It is marked:

           BS1 D1A Q412 a
           950 - 2000Mhz / 1500Mhz - 2000 Mhz
           LO 10.750Ghz

Would you recomment dumping this and getting a $25 LNB from a local freeview store or would I be better using the Sharp? It has two heavy cables from it, which one or both? use a combiner?
Will I get more (useful) channels or no?

Suggestions welcome.

I would try it first, it sounds like a dual lnb and will be on D1 ( sky ) and C1 / D3. if you get the right receiver you may be able to get some C1 channels from Australia but dont get used to them as they are planning to turn them off this year. There may be other channels on D3 in the future that you may be able to watch.
If the signal is not sufficent I would change the LNB, they dont last forever ( in saying that my Sharp is at least 12 or 13 years old )

Yupp, thats what was there, even though she had bought a neww $299 kit, I didn't have the heart ( intestinal fortitude,) to tell her, so I just whipped of the sky dish and put hers up. Now I have a FREE 65cm dish.

Hmm, for a mere $25 or so I'll just change the LNB. Any sugestions for a popular/ good one for D1/D2 C1?

Well,
The cheap LNB's are cheap for a reason.
I like the Sharp LNB's particually the ones that sky use that have the dual throught.

I have a motek on my dish so only need a single throught LNB, I am still using my old Sharp 11300 ex ihug that I bought in 2003 and would be at least 13 years old.

If I was to replace the LNB, I would look at one of these, I used to work with this guy a fair few moons ago and I know he is straight up.

I installed a second hand sky dish with the oval (dual) lnb, and pointed it at C1, which meant that the second offset lnb receives from D2 when the 22khz switch is set. I'm receiving SBS and Central 7 (OZ) from B1, and I'm receiving BVN, RT, Press TV, NHK and a lot of sh1t from D2.
If your LNB has 2 cables, it may be that it doesn't have the 22khz switch builtin. This is a good thing if you've got multiple TV's - it means that you can receive from both LNB's at the same time. You will need a diseqc switch or 2 in order to make the most of your installation.
