Hi, we have a Sony DVD player/recorder, model RDR HX7 10/HX910, that worked well with the old TV.We now have a LG digital, built in freeview , model 26/LD350, and I cannot get the DVD player to install, and find the right channel on the TV for it to play a DVD, on the old TV it was Channel 1, I do not want to record TV programs, but be able to play the DVD's made from our video cameras, ( The DVD plays OK on the PC )The lead has white,yellow and red connectors, at each end, the TV has AV in 1, or component in, or AV in 2, and also there is an aerial lead. Any help to sort this will be so appreciated. Regards, Nancyjj

What connection on the TV do you have it connected to at present? Ideally you should be using the component out if you want the best quality.

plug those yellow, white and red connectors from the DVD player into the TV and note that input chosen and choose this input on your remote.
On the remote you should see an 'input' button or a button with a picture that looks like an arrow pointing into a box. This button will let you choose AV1, AV2 etc etc. You might find that the LG TV itself allows you to rename the AV1 designation to anything you want or already has designated "DVD" to a particular input... I wouldnt worry if the channel label is wrong, just keep trying inputs (staying at each input selected for at least 5 seconds) until you see the DVD playing.

Sounds like when you said "used to be channel 1" that you might have had it plugged in using the aerial cable on the old TV?

If you want to, check out the SKY website (doesnt matter if you dont have SKY), it should show you the set up diagram of anything you might have eg show you the logical flow. If your DVD recorder isnt freeview capable then you wont be having much luck trying to record TV except for the channel your watching (if you loop the output of the TV back to the recorder).

EDIT: just remember when your plugging in those red, white and yellow connectors into the TV make sure its using the 'input' as opposed to an 'output'. As above the input symbol will be a box with a arrow pointing in and the output will be a box with a arrow pointing out of it OR the TV simply might say IN or OUT.

Just plug the yellow, red and white leads into the AV1 sockets on the TV and select the AV1 input. Component leads to component in would be better still. Not sure how you could have watched using channel1 as I didn't think those DVD recorders had rf out and watching via rf gives the worst possible picture anyway.

Hi, thanks to you all, have it sorted finally, on the old analogue Tv, the DVD channel was Channel 1, on the new LG digital TV, I have to go to " input", select AV in 1 , then it goes well. not as easy as the old set up, but a whole lot cheaper than buying a new Blu Ray or other player. I used the three-cord connection to each the player and TV, and our video played perfectly. Many thanks again. regards, Nancyjj

If you go and buy yourself a component video cable and connect component out on the DVD to component in on the TV you'll get even better picture quality.

Hi, thanks for your help, the TV has 5 sockets , for component in, green (Y), blue ( PB) and red ( PR), for video, then white (L) and red ( R) for audio, on the player, in component are 3 sockets, green, blue,red, Do I need a cord with 5 for the TV and 3 for the player? The red shed and other TV and electronic sale places have component cords for about $30. we live near P North,which has specialised shops for these. Hi Darth, the TV which is 2 years old, has a HDMI socket, not one on the player, that would be over 8 years old, on the laptop there is one, do I need to upgrade to a better HDMI cable as well, then direct from PC to TV. Component is on each.

You would normally get a cable with 3 RCA plugs - green/red/blue to carry the component video signal.

Hello, you could get yourself a HDMI cable to connect your laptop to your TV. Don't be suckered into buying one of those expensive cables though, they won't give a better picture.

If you get a bluray player, a HDMI cable is the only way to get full 1080 high definition playback. I've noticed that some bluray players now don't even have analogue outputs.

Hi Garth, we have a HDMI cable, style 20276, 30V, VW-1, HDMI, SHH, and on the TV, there is HDMI DVI IN 1, HDMI IN 2, which do I use, , and then I go to (input) and select the chosen socket. Is one better, or for something else? then I can play the video directly on the TV from the laptop ,The cable is only a few months old. When we do get a Blu-ray, can I play the DVD on it that I have made from our Gopro videos?Or will it need an adaptor? or converter? And just to confuse the issue even more, Can I also play a slide show of my own photos this way , direct to the TV?Or is it only for videos? I am so grateful for all your help. Cheers, Nancyjj

Blu Ray players and recorders are backwards compatible. i.e. they should play all discs that your current DVD recorder will play.
They also have LAN sockets so you can connect to your home network. You should be able to stream photos, movies etc from your PC/Laptop to the player via a network cable or via WiFi (if it has WiFI built in) then to Tv via HDMI cable. They also have USB sockets which can be used for playing movies, photos, mp3 audio etc from flash drives. Time you upgraded perhaps??

I have the LG, 26" TV , fine for our smaller room, and my/both laptops are wireless, so yes, will do that. Somewhere I read that the DVD would not play on the newer BluRay? So glad I was wrong. If you are worried about any of your discs not playing just take them into a store and ask for a demo of several players/recorders. I have a Panasonic BWT720 BluRay Recorder and can thoroughly recommend them. Plays everything I have except some of my backup discs burnt using particular DVD software. Seems to be a problem only with 3D models as they play OK on non-3D models and I now use different software for my backups.

DVD players will not play Bluray disks. Bluray players should normally be able to play DVDs though.
