Just out of interest, what size sat dish would be required to pick up the ozzie beam transponders in nz? Is it even possible?

Not really. It's like trying to illuminate your house while standing in front of it in the street at night and pointing your torch at the house next door. NZ isn't in the beam's footprint. There may be a bit of spillover but not enough to be of use.

It barely worked on a dish as tall as me for someone near here. Got some of the foxtel stuff but was dropping in and out all the time, LNB selection was very important. Not a reliable service.

I wasn't looking for the pay tv feeds either, just the fta stuff. What about VAST coverage in NZ? Is that possible off D3?

Foxtel and VAST are both broadcast from D3, so presumably the comments from richms about Foxtel reception apply similarly for VAST. Note that although the channels included with VAST are free to air via terrestrial broadcasts, they are encrypted for satellite broadcasts. Also, my understanding is that VAST smartcards have to be paired with a single approved receiver. This is a significant departure from the situation that we had with Optus Aurora, where one of the transponders (carrying a couple of SBS One versions + 7) was a dual AU/NZ beam and the smartcards were not paired.

The stuff on D1 Aus beam isn't available here. The issue is the frequency's are re-used. Not just the beams issue.
Example
12451 H is SBS Australia
12456 H is Freeview NZ

Even if you had a massive dish the Freeview NZ signal will swamp it.

Optus D1 isn't the only satellite. You can get other stations from other satellites with that thing.
