Hey all.

I've been running a couple of Windows MCE 2005 boxes since early 2006 and to date they have performed superbly, even playing Hi-Def video.  After finally getting my HVR-2200 DVB-T card yesterday I thought I ought to get Freeview up and running and came across the whole MS can't be bothered issue.

I've tried DVBViewer, Mediaportal and GBPVR (which just works BTW) and for most stff the experience is as good as WinMCE BUT....

It is all too apparent that my primary HTPC just is not up to handling the HiDef stuff on TV3.  95% CPU and seriously stuttery.

Given the spec below do I;

1) Get hold of an Athlon x2 Dual Core 4200 for $280,
2) Bin the board and current CPU and throw something else in, or
3) Fit a spanky new NVidia 8500GT or better?

Really I can only justify one of the three options as budget is/will be limited.

Thoughts people?

Current Spec
AMD Athlon 63 3700+ on an Asus A8N-SLI Mobo, with video curtesy of an Asus Extreme N6600 Silencer all backed up with 1Gb dual channel RAM and plenty of disk space.   Rolled together in a neat pile and stuffed into a Silverstone SST-LC16M ATX Home Theatre Case.

I second the GFX.

Spending $280 on a s939 x2 is a bit OTT when a AM2 4200, AM2 mobo, 2GB ram, and HD3450 GFX cost $372.

$100 - 150 gfx will do the job easily.

Cheers

$105 8500GT
OR
$170 8600GT

Both will work, depends on preference.

Hey Barney. Guess who Cool

I've upgraded a 3GhZ P4 with a 8500GT card and enabled h.264 h/w acceleration. The GPU handles the h.264 no problems with the CPU running at no more than 20% (was 100%).

The only problem I've got now is that I get jitter (see my other post). Trying to sort this out.

I'm running XP MCE, and using DVR9 in DVBViewer. So far I've been using the Cyberlink codec which comes with the Twinhan Digital TV package. See http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=84&TopicId=20747

What if you want to upgrade your HTPC to Freeview HD but not decode any HD, what would the hardware requirements/recommendations be?  I want to upgrade my box but will not be interested in HD for a couple of years.  Thanks.

You can never have enough Volvos!

There is no such thing, all channels are transmitted in H.264.

In Australia for example with it's MPEG2 based DVB-T most channels are transmitted in both MPEG2 SD and MPEG2 HD which uses twice the bandwidth.

So the concensus here is that a decent GPU makes the world of difference.  I could have believed it provided some  help but in all my geekiness I wouldn't have guessed as much.

@seasport - hey Chris!  Just gonna run over to Rob's and grab his son's 8500 (Max blew his old machine up so salvaged the card and hasn't used it yet) Wink

Fingers crossed this will ease the HiDef pain.

@sbiddle you're of course rght in that Freeview HD is high def but not everything on Freeview is HD, even though it is all encoded in h.264.  This became really apparant here when my HTPC rocked just fine on most channels, and wasn't too bad on even the Freeview HD preview channel, but on TV3 it sucked.

Thanks guys and fingers crossed.  Right GB-PVR time now.

What I was trying to get across was the fact there is no way to just get a cheap upgrade to watch Freeview|HD but only watch it in SD as there is only a single transmission. TV1, TV2 and TV3 are all broadcast in HD even though only a handful of shows are actually native HD.

Okay - stll not tried the 8500GT BUT....  would running a pair of these things in SLI mode help even more?  At $130 each a pair isn't out of reach.

There is no need for SLI - one 8500 is more than enough to cope with a H.264 video stream.

I agree with sbiddle, sli really not needed, twice the heat + noise = annoying HTPC. If you were going to spend that cash, you would probably be better going for a better card? 9600gts for example, but unless you are playing games n stuff then the cheaper option should be just fine.

Again thanks guys for the help and advice.  A swift Asus 8600GT Silent 256Mb DDR-3 jobbie has sorted the issue and breathed new life into the HTPC.  Awesome
