Morning, Newbie here so dunno if this is the right place to post but I have seen various forums about picking up background feeds for Channel 9, and most aus/overseas channels. I have also read that you would need a DVB-S2 Decoder and the best one costs around $160

Except I don't have that kind of money... I do want to get working on it, however... Mainly for two reasons

- I love the content on Channel 9, most of its programs aren't all bad

- I'm interested into looking behind background feeds of networks

- Live and Free (some) NRL / Cricket / State of Origin (plus I personally prefer Ch9s commentary/coverage, so yes we have sky but not really a fan of FOX League)

I would rather do this setup instead of using a DNS (exclusively, anyway) for this exact purpose, since sports isn't even available on 9Now, nor background / network feeds

So I am asking, can I use any other cheap equipment to pick up Channel 9? Any non-expensive decoders? Or maybe even an adapter to hook up to a laptop and attempt to watch Optus D1 Channels there?

I am literally seeking every possible solution but would like to confirm everything I know before I make a purchase. I have a lot of doubts

Unless something has changed in the past year or so, there is isn't a constant Channnel 9 feed on Optus D1 or D2. Just the occasional uplinks for games.

I wouldn't shell out for equipment with the expectation you can do this, you will be disappointed

I would recommend checking out the satellite forum on Austech. Vetrun used to have a really good forum for feeds, but that is gone now.

Oh yeah I remember that. I wouldn't mind always experimenting however, I remember there was a clean Channel 9 feed based in TW9 Perth so...theres that (Assuming you can still pick it up) and the Nine Network Sports Feed but I'll look deeper - the DNS/Internet method works but theres no sport w/ 9now

No offense, but if you're after feeds of games etc, then online streaming options are where this has moved to now.

Catching spill feeds etc would be fun in say Europe, where you are close by another country and can pick up quality signals that weren't actually intended for your country, but NZ is an island and most of what is receivable here is intended for NZ anyway.

As others have hinted here, the game is not what it used to be.

Aight', I'll seek alternatives. The internet hasn't been a great option for Streaming (for our location anyway)

Two points:

If you are a Sky Sports subscriber, you can get Channel Nine's audio feed for the NRL games by using the yellow button on your remote control. For the games that Nine don't broadcast (i.e. not Thursday night, 10pm Friday night, 6pm Sunday games), the alternate feed is the commentary free one. IMHO best thing Sky TV has done this year is provided the Fox League coverage. Means I only need to listen to Rabs and Gus four times (three SoO and the grand final).

A cheaper option to watch the channels of Nine, Seven and ABC is to invest in a VPN (many are around the $5/month mark) that have a server in Australia. All three networks provide all their channels live via their website and the mobile apps. SBS have most of their content via their On Demand site/app. ABC is NSW only. Nine and Seven offer feeds for all mainland state capitals. You can also use the VPN and point it to Sweden to watch ad free HD NRL coverage via livestream.com/nrl (and in the case of games shown on both Nine and Fox League, they take the Nine coverage).

This was primarilly my main reason for the DVB-S2 Method. We have SKY Sport but half the time we don't have access to the SKY/An actual TV/SKY Go never works. Plus the Aus cricket is never online, hence my thought that this would still be feasible (then theres the general Ch9 TV Show content). Thanks for those explanations, I'll take that into consideration + try your first suggestion

If Windows w/ VLC Media Player (or similar sat receiver software) + A USB Tuner for Satellite card works (or even exists) then I believe I will look further into it. Otherwise, what decoder do you recommend to make this work? You reckon I can use an standard sized SKY Dish?

It will work in DVB Dream software, but USB tuners tend to be deaf.

DVB Dream can pipe it out to VLC or MPC if that's what your prefer as your choice of player

My knowledge of satellite reception is limited as I never got into it in a big way, but even with a casual set-up I can receive D1, D2 and IS 19 without any problem. My receiver is a cheap Chinese generic box and the dish is an old Sky one that is actually 80 cm rather than the smaller ones that are now installed. With this I get good reception on all three satellites and can receive Oz channel 9 without any problem. The dish is fixed and I assume pointed at D1 for Sky, but I was able to add D2 and Intelsat 19 with a couple of cheap offset-mounted LNBs. The three satellites are close enough to each other to make this possible. I don't know if OP could do the same, but for me it was a pretty cheap solution.

I reckon I can try that. Our one was installed around the 90's so I reckon I can also pick it up. The only trouble I have is the software (if I end up using my PC) or Hardware (an actual working decoder), and what would actually work, since this method seems deprecated since online streaming came about.

I have used DNS4ME and 9now (using kodi or VLC) and I have learnt three things:

- It stutters on 14mb/s d/l vdsl (thanks Spark)

- Theres no Cricket (at all...can't even find an online stream anywhere)

- It's just not the real thing in terms of TV... (I'm a huge Television viewer/fan)

I'd rather Aus TV channels and their content rather than what TVNZ/Three offer. IMHO the content is bloody boring here).
