We are ditching the sky but have a splitter inside that goes to the lounge tv and kitchen tv from the cable running to the sky dish.

Am I able to just disconnect this cable from the sky dish and re-wire it to the freeview aerial so I don't have to re-do any of the internal wiring?

Is this easy to do? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

In theory, yes.

Be aware though, that the dish (and cable etc) actually belong to Sky. Can't see it being an issue and it should work fine. You will need to get some adaptors for the TV end to change from F-Connector to Belling Lee (coax) so it plugs into your TVs.

As long as the splitter also supports UHF frequencies you should be fine - normally printed on the side of it.

Thanks. I found this video regarding wiring the freeview dish. Is it pretty much this straight forward?

Any other tips or potential problems that could arise would be greatly appreciated.

That video link has nothing to do with wiring a satellite dish. It's all about wiring a UHF Antenna. But yes, you can just disconnect the cable from the Sky Dish and connect to a UHF antenna.

Have you tried just plugging it in and seeing if you get reception without moving it. I was in a high signal area of Wellington and found I got perfect DVB-T reception (UHF Freeview) just from the dish. A coat hanger probably would have worked too ;)

I'm actually not moving anything. The sky dish and freeview aerial are both working fine. Just want to use the existing sky cable and wire it to the freeview aerial so the internal wiring doesn't need to change.

In saying that, can you get freeview over a sky dish without any other equipment needed? I thought you need a DVB-S receiver in your TV or STB. Also from memory it only broadcasts in SD not HD.

I think what kharris is saying is if you live in a really good signal area, pretty much anything will work as an aerial - including the metal parts of a Sky dish.

Depends on your line of sight, you may be surprised. Worth checking though before you swap cabling over. Might save you a job.

I'm on the North Shore too and I can get a signal OK with just a short piece of wire stuck in the antenna socket. I can see the Waiatarua Tx mast out the Lounge windows though.

Sky dish didn't work to use as the antenna. re-wired it up using the UHF aerial and all is working sweet!
