We are returning to NZ in a month and will be bringing our current UK Sky+ decoder with us.

Is it possible to either hack the box and change the software, or change the firmware somehow to get the box to work in NZ for Freeview and/or Sky?

Nope many have tried, no ones succeded to my understanding, leave it in blighty, best place for it. Sky control what boxs are on the system, its simply not going to happen and as the firmware of both NZ and UK boxs dont support manual config you cannot even use it for FTA.
