Currently I am a TCL subscriber for cable TV. I receive Freeview HD only using a DVB-T tuner and gbpvr but haven't had time to work out the complex configurations to get gbpvr to actually playback the recorded broadcasts. For that I use a Popcorn Hour and for most channels have to record and transcode the audio before I can hear it (apart from TV3).

I need a plug and play solution that doesn't need me to be there and can support real time viewing. The choices are a FreeviewHD STB or possibly the TCL HD STB. Assuming TCL get the licensing sorted out I can't imagine their box being free - something along the lines of an additional $20/month is not beyond the realms of possibility (doubt if they would ask you to buy the box though like Sky). So assuming a FreeviewHD STB is about $350 the point at which the two costs converge is at over 18 months and the TCL box will record.

Seems like a no brainer if I want to watch HD easily but just wonder what others who are TCL subscribers and also capturing HD now think.

Thanks

Wait. Freeview HD PVR's come out soon, so by then Telstra should shed more light on what their setup will be.

That's what I am thinking. For me anyway, the only channel I watch/record on FreeviewHD is TV3 and I can record and watch that fine. There is the occasional shows on TV1 in HD I might want to watch (quite like Criminal Minds) but for the rest I can just use DVB-S or TCL cable.  The only pressure on me now is CTV8 which is only on the Freeview UHF platform. No easy way to watch that at the moment with my setup.

The new beta versions of GB-PVR have a lot of improvements for DVB-T and it's now very stable. Also has a few cool features that only Media Portal had before.

You had suitable hardware for GB-PVR and H.264 hardware acceleration didn't you? If so I'm sure it's not far away from a release now so could be worth checking out.

Well I sort of have the right hardware but not all installed. The CPU is a modest AMD Sempron (64 bit) 3000 which in itself wouldn't do it. I do have a ATI 2600 video card (can't recall the manufacturer) but it's AGP and I have read reports here that it's somewhat tricky to get hardware acceleration to work with the AGP cards (though not impossible). So not installed yet.

When I try to playback DVB-T recordings using gbpvr the video is all messed up (a kaleidoscope of colour I guess would describe it) but I do get audio since gbpvr has support for AAC audio.

Interestingly when I installed the latest beta of xbmc that product played back the DVB-T broadcasts with video (though very jerky given the modest CPU) but no audio. So it seems by gbpvr installation isn't quite right and I might have to blow it away and start again and also install the new video card.

Looks like a Christmas project and/or wait to see what TCL come up with

Larry
